This is one of our favourite Canterbury boltholes, an exceptionally well-run, centrally-located, funky and friendly boutique B&B that was featured – and highly praised – on Channel 4's 'Four in a Bed' series. Once a restaurant, and a nightclub before that, it’s situated in a Grade-II listed historic house said to be mentioned in ‘David Copperfield’, with a beautiful (and surprisingly large) walled garden out the back, nine quirky rooms inside and eight in the converted stables overlooking the well-maintained grounds.
Each bedroom in the main building is individually decorated according to a theme – mostly cities – meaning you can spend the night in the Mumbai, Marrakesh or Tokyo, to name just the most exotic destinations. Stay in romantic Paris and make the most of a huge ensuite with chequerboard flooring and claw-foot bath; opt for Venice and enjoy sumptuous decor. They all have wifi, flatscreen TVs and DVD players, plus coffee and tea-making facilities and decent-sized bath or shower rooms. There’s an honesty bar and a cosy lounge with books and board games, and the breakfasts are excellent and generous – plus they'll prepare a takeaway breakfast for early departures. In short a unique, great-value place to stay right in the heart of Canterbury.
