Self-catering cottages and lodges on a converted Oxfordshire farm
Situated between the Chilterns and the Cotswolds, and just over an hour from London, Kingfisher Barn is ideally placed for a getaway in the Oxfordshire countryside. This converted 17th-century farm just outside Abingdon offers a cluster of self-catering holiday homes, with an option for just about everyone. There’s a cosy apartment for couples, cottages to sleep up to four and two spacious lodges that can easily accommodate eight. Some have been designed with accessibility in mind, and some are family-friendly – and dogs are welcome in all of them.
Although each cottage and lodge is different, they all share a farmhouse aesthetic. It is, of course, more than a 'look', it’s in the bones of the buildings themselves. The two four-bed lodges, Kyte and Kestrel, occupy a converted barn alongside a bolthole apartment for couples, The Nest. The other cottages are former farm buildings: the exteriors are all stone, brick and handmade tiles, while inside there’s an abundance of beams. That’s especially true of The Nest and the lodges, whose soaring vaulted ceilings give the wow-factor to the open-plan living spaces. The huge windows and stunning views help with that, too.
While there’s authenticity and traditional charm throughout the accommodation at Kingfisher Barn, it’s carefully balanced with the demands of modern life. A well-equipped kitchen is standard, bathrooms and wet rooms are neat and fresh. A Smart TV and WiFi are included in each of these holiday homes, and while it’s mostly wooden floors and traditional furniture, you can count on soft upholstery where it counts and a few surprises here and there. The lodges, especially, have flashes of contemporary colour and charm.
Outside, there’s a shared lawn and some of the cottages have a private courtyard, but it’s the wider setting that’s particularly charming. Kingfisher Barn, which also offers 10 B&B rooms, is a very short walk from the River Thames, with the Thames Path National Trail running alongside. It’s a 10-minute stroll from the ancient market town of Abingdon, a 20-minute drive from Oxford and 30 minutes from Blenheim Palace. A week or weekend is very easily spent here.
