Self-catering cottages and lodges on a converted Oxfordshire farm

Situated between the Chilterns and the Cotswolds, and just over an hour from London, Kingfisher Barn is ideally placed for a getaway in the Oxfordshire countryside. This converted 17th-century farm just outside Abingdon offers a cluster of self-catering holiday homes, with an option for just about everyone. There’s a cosy apartment for couples, cottages to sleep up to four and two spacious lodges that can easily accommodate eight. Some have been designed with accessibility in mind, and some are family-friendly – and dogs are welcome in all of them.

Although each cottage and lodge is different, they all share a farmhouse aesthetic. It is, of course, more than a 'look', it’s in the bones of the buildings themselves. The two four-bed lodges, Kyte and Kestrel, occupy a converted barn alongside a bolthole apartment for couples, The Nest. The other cottages are former farm buildings: the exteriors are all stone, brick and handmade tiles, while inside there’s an abundance of beams. That’s especially true of The Nest and the lodges, whose soaring vaulted ceilings give the wow-factor to the open-plan living spaces. The huge windows and stunning views help with that, too.

While there’s authenticity and traditional charm throughout the accommodation at Kingfisher Barn, it’s carefully balanced with the demands of modern life. A well-equipped kitchen is standard, bathrooms and wet rooms are neat and fresh. A Smart TV and WiFi are included in each of these holiday homes, and while it’s mostly wooden floors and traditional furniture, you can count on soft upholstery where it counts and a few surprises here and there. The lodges, especially, have flashes of contemporary colour and charm.

Outside, there’s a shared lawn and some of the cottages have a private courtyard, but it’s the wider setting that’s particularly charming. Kingfisher Barn, which also offers 10 B&B rooms, is a very short walk from the River Thames, with the Thames Path National Trail running alongside. It’s a 10-minute stroll from the ancient market town of Abingdon, a 20-minute drive from Oxford and 30 minutes from Blenheim Palace. A week or weekend is very easily spent here.

Facilities

The Nest - our one bedroom, first floor apartment nestled in the roof of the main barn conversion. The huge window connects you with outside and brings plenty of natural light in to the open plan living area. Tucked further back in the apartment you will find the double bedroom and spacious bathroom.
Granary cottage - also one bedroom but split over two floors. Upstairs is the huge bedroom with a king size bed and the bathroom. Downstairs is an open plan kitchen living room, equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Exposed beams and brickwork fill Granary cottage with character.
Hazel cottage - all at ground level, Hazel cottage sleeps 3 guests across 2 bedrooms; one single and one either king or twin. The wet room makes Hazel a great option for wheelchair users and the open kitchen living room makes socialising a breeze.
Stable cottage - also all at ground level, Stable cottage offers a little more space with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large living dining room and separate kitchen. The 2 bedrooms can accommodate 4 guests and an extra 2 could utilise the sofa bed. The main bedroom has an en suite shower room and there's a spacious family bathroom.
Kyte & Kestrel lodge - Each lodge can sleep 8 guests across 4 bedrooms, all of which can be arranged as two single beds or one king size bed. Both lodges have a large living area, open kitchen and 3 bathrooms across 2 floors, so there's plenty of room to relax. The beautiful high beamed ceilings and large windows create an openness in the living area, flooding the lodges with natural light and softening the distinction between the outside and in. Bold patterns and bright colours introduce a modern touch, complimenting the original wood and stone features of the traditional barn building. With a patio on both sides of the barn and ample lawn space, you can really make the most of the fresh air and glorious surroundings. With both bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor, the lodges are a great option for those that are less mobile or wheel chair users.
Both Stable cottage and the lodges are also equipped with ceiling hoist tracking, for which we can arrange the hire of a hoist.
Dogs are welcome in all of our accommodation so no-one gets left behind. All of our properties also include fresh linen and towels, free toiletries, tea towels and cleaning/washing up supplies, tea & coffee, smart TVs and superfast free BT wifi.

Nearby

Walk a stretch of the Thames path - depending how athletic you're feeling, you can take a gentle stroll along a short stretch of the path and loop back to us or venture further afield and walk to a neighbouring village or town.
Abingdon Museum - As the oldest inhabited town in England, Abingdon has got a rich history to uncover. From the museum you can also visit the roof of the grand county hall building for the best views of the town.
Visit the White Horse - Uffington White Horse is a prehistoric hill figure made of chalk stretching 110 meters! White horse hill is also the highest point in Oxfordshire with unrivalled views of the county. There is a national trust carpark and the area is also dog friendly.
Abbey meadows - keep the little ones entertained for hours at Abbey meadows, park and outdoor pool (in the summer season). There is a huge park to entertain kids of all ages. The meadow is just down the lane and over the lock from us so even the walk there is enjoyable! In the warm weather cool off at the splash pad or book a swim in the outdoor pool, and of course ice creams are available from here too! The playpark, splash pad and pool do not allow dogs but Abbey meadows is great place to take your dog to stretch their legs.
Millets Farm - There's something for the whole family at Millets, stroll down Animal walkway and meet some new friends, peruse the farm shop and garden centre or let loose in the soft play. They also have some small independent shops, a cafe, play area, mini golf, maize maze and more! You'll really enjoy the peace of our barn after a day at Millets that's for sure!
Abingdon distillery & Loose Cannon Brewery - for a more mature (sometimes...) crowd, why not enjoy a local tipple. With both the distillery and brewery offering tours and hosting events you're sure to have a good time! Abingdon has a long history of brewing so you can even claim it's cultural...

Excellent

This was a great place to meet up with friends for a long weekend. Away from the bustle of Abingdon but close enough to walk along the river and into town. Accommodation was excellent and it had everything we needed. Also a convenient place to stay if you want to get into Oxford, very good bus service. Would definitely recommend and may well be back!
