Oxford is not short of classy lodgings, but few hit the spot like the Old Bank Hotel, with its privileged location on High Street 9 (“The High”) and its extremely agreeable rooms and restaurant. It’s the kind of place where the rooms come with artworks from the owner’s private collection, handmade beds, bespoke leather writing desks and Italian marble bathrooms, and that’s before we even hone in on the magnificence that is the ‘Room with the View’ – a £1500-a-night rooftop bedroom and terrace that has the most extraordinary vantage point over Oxford’s dreaming spires.
Most of the other rooms, right down to the small doubles, have a dreamy Oxford view of some kind over world-famous landmarks, from the Bodleian Library to one of the encircling colleges. There’s car parking, a bonus if there ever was one, plus use of the hotel’s own fleet of bicycles, which really is the way to see the town. In the ‘Quod’ restaurant and bar, meanwhile, you have one of Oxford’s most popular eating places, with its heated garden terrace and a sensationally good value set lunch.
