Windmills you can stay in don’t come along often, and this beautifully restored Grade II listed one, nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside near Bicester, is a truly unique escape. Offering exclusive use of the entire property, it sleeps up to four adults (aged 13+) across two en-suite bedrooms, making it perfect for a romantic getaway or a relaxing break with family or friends. Couples also benefit from a reduced nightly rate.
The only self-catering windmill in the heart of England, original character blends effortlessly with contemporary comfort. Curving stone walls, exposed beams, wooden floors and a striking spiral staircase lead through the windmill, while carefully chosen furnishings and modern amenities ensure a luxurious stay throughout.
Step through the original oak door into your private roof garden and discover two beautifully appointed en-suite bedrooms, each with a Smart TV. Upstairs, the fully equipped kitchen includes everything needed for a comfortable stay, from a dishwasher and Nespresso coffee machine to thoughtful essentials such as tea, sugar, olive oil and washing-up supplies.
The real showstopper is the glass-wrapped
Sky Lounge at the very top of the windmill. From here, spectacular 360-degree views stretch across three counties. Watch red kites soaring overhead, spot deer grazing in the surrounding countryside, and enjoy unforgettable sunrises and sunsets from one of Oxfordshire’s most distinctive places to stay. It’s easy to see why The Windmill at Blackthorn Hill was featured in The Times’ 10 Best Places to Stay with Spectacular Views. It was also part of House Beautiful's Wonderful Windmills for a Unique Staycation article.
For those wishing to explore, Bicester Village is just a five-minute drive away, while Blenheim Palace and the historic city of Oxford are both within 30 minutes. At the end of the day, return to the peace and privacy of the windmill, where secure gated parking for two vehicles and an EV charger are provided. If you’d rather dine in, Ocado, Sainsbury’s and Tesco all deliver directly to the door.

What an exceptional place to stay!
My friend and I came here on an impromptu mini break, probably the best impromptu trip I’ve ever made! The windmill is a stunning example of how dedication, heart and soul can combine to create something spectacular. The views are beautiful, the entire place is spotless, it is incredibly comfortable and peaceful, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s also only five minutes away from Bicester Village which was brilliant! Huge thanks to both of you. I hope to return again.

A truly special stay
From the moment we arrived at The Windmill, it was clear this was something out of the ordinary. Set on Blackthorn Hill just minutes from Bicester Village, the property is simply stunning — beautifully designed, immaculately clean, and somehow managing to feel both contemporary and genuinely homely at the same time.
Alan and Cristina are exceptional hosts. Warm, friendly, and immediately responsive to any message, they strike exactly the right balance — present when you need them, entirely unobtrusive when you don’t. The kitchen is brilliantly equipped with everything you could possibly need — a real pleasure to cook in. The living room is a highlight in itself: comfortable, stylishly furnished, and commanding breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside that stopped us in our tracks every time we walked in. The bedrooms are extremely comfortable with excellent beds. I’ll be returning for sure.

Just spent a very lovely weekend at The Windmill
It's a really unique property, full of character and very cleverly and tastefully renovated.
Alan was on hand to answer some pre-trip questions we had and was extremely helpful with local suggestions too.
The whole place is very clearly labelled with even qr codes which was very helpful.
The bedrooms are very cosy with great mattresses and pillows.
The kitchen has everything you need although we only cooked once there as there as there are so many great places to eat close by... The Nut Tree Inn and The Killingworth Castle being two of our favourites.
Our favourite room was the lounge at the very top, really cosy with great views of the surrounding area from windows that go all the way round.
Thank you for a very enjoyable and replenishing stay :)

Staying in this windmill was an absolute delight!
The building itself is full of quirky charm, with its unique design and thoughtful touches that make it truly one of a kind. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the panoramic views whether it was sunrise, sunset, or the night sky.
The windmill’s interior blends its historic character with modern comfort. Climbing up and down the levels was part of the fun, and the layout made every corner feel like a mini adventure. Despite its unconventional structure, it was very well-equipped and cozy, with everything we needed for a relaxing stay.
The Alan & Christina were welcoming and ensured we had a seamless experience. If you’re looking for a stay that’s not just accommodation but an experience in itself, this windmill is an absolute gem.
Perfect for a romantic getaway and made it made my wife’s birthday extra special.
