Given that each Oxford term is only eight weeks long, it’s quite easy to time your visit to be outside university term time. And if you do, you can have a full Oxford experience by booking a room, including breakfast, in one of the student colleges. Sleep in some of the city’s grandest buildings (options include Jesus, Wadham and Magdalen Colleges), tuck into breakfast in the college’s fine dining halls, and explore the pretty quads and gardens too. Follow in the footsteps of British politicians, famous actors and American presidents (many were once students here), and be inspired by the epic surroundings. On a more practical level, you’re unlikely to find a double room – almost all are singles and twins – and not everything is en-suite. You'll also need to book at least three months in advance, while some properties don’t have facilities for children and families. However, by staying, you’re helping to keep the buildings in tip-top condition. And it's worth knowing that you can find exactly the same thing in University Rooms, Cambridge.

The Owner Says

This is an amazing opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes peek at some of Oxford's most historic buildings. During the holidays, when students vacate their rooms, you can stay in one of the college residences, enjoy a stroll along the quads, and maybe enjoy a drink in the college bar.

Choose from one of 30 Oxford University residences, including Keble College where you can enjoy breakfast in the magnificent Gothic dining hall, or perhaps Christ Church where parts of the first Harry Potter film was staged.

Whichever college you chose, you will be sure to receive a warm welcome. Rooms are generally available when students vacate during the holidays, although some residences have year round availability.

Getting There

Trains from London leave from Paddington Station. Driving can be difficult in Oxford as many roads are closed to traffic and parking can be at a premium. Some colleges do offer limited parking at a cost – check before booking.
