Comfy bed and breakfast in the Oxfordshire countryside near Abingdon
Tucked down a quiet Oxfordshire lane, Kingfisher Barn offers simple but very comfortable B&B accommodation in a simply lovely setting. And the name hints at what’s nearby. This place is a kingfisher’s dart away from the River Thames as it wends its way peacefully past the ancient market town of Abingdon, which sits on the opposite bank. It’s said to be the oldest continually inhabited town in England, and its abbey, picturesque streets and riverside gardens are only a 10-minute walk away. Bedding down at Kingfisher Barn, therefore, is a great idea if you want to explore the town, the wider delights of Oxfordshire or are walking the Thames Path National Trail.
There are 10 guest rooms at Kingfisher Barn, along with a clutch of self-catering cottages, all part of a 17th-century farm. The B&B rooms themselves occupy the former stables and stand out from your typical guest house in that each has its own entrance and all are on the ground floor. This means you can step straight out into a pretty, shared courtyard. One is specifically designed for accessibility, with a roll-in wet-room-style bathroom that’s suitable for wheelchair users. Two of the doubles have showers over baths, and the rest have shower cubicles. It’s worth mentioning here, too, that all rooms and cottages at Kingfisher Barn are dog-friendly.
There’s a mixture of doubles, twins and singles. All share the same straightforward style: whitewashed walls and wooden floors, warmed by thoughtful lighting and blankets on neatly-made beds. Each is en-suite, and bathrooms are modern, with towels and toiletries provided. There’s a TV, WiFi and tea- and coffee-making facilities in each room.
Breakfast is served up every morning in a log cabin just across the courtyard and can be eaten inside or outside on patio tables. It’s just the thing to set you up for a day of walking along the river or strolling around town. For those things, you needn’t get in the car, but if you’re here for the weekend (and why not?), you might want to go a little further. Oxford’s spires are only a 20-minute drive away, and magnificent Blenheim Palace is only 10 minutes further than that.
