Based on a working beef, sheep and arable farm in Berkshire, in the heart of the Wessex Downs AONB, Little Fleece at Folly Farm is a thoroughly rural place to stay. Set in its own very private paddock next door to the farmhouse, this rather luxurious shepherds hut has everything you need for a comfortable stay, whether you're a seasoned glamper or recent convert.

Recently added to the farm by David and Jane Carlisle and their daughter Tory, and handmade in nearby Somerset, the hut is a dream escape, just a couple of hours from London or Bristol and with no TV, wifi or anything else to distract you from enjoying the nature that surrounds you. Cattle and sheep graze in the field behind the paddock, and there's nothing like waking up to the sound of the farm animals nearby, while you may also get to see  the farm’s resident barn owl, as well as plenty of other birds, so bring your binoculars! .

The hut is a traditional shepherds hut and very cosy; it's insulated with sheep’s wool but has all modern amenities you need , with mains electricity and a DAB radio and USB charging points, hot and cold running water, a fully equipped kitchenette with hob, fridge, crockery and utensils – and its own en-suite shower room and loo. There's a double bed that can fold away to reveal a snug seating and dining area, finished in oak with high quality furniture and storage above the bed and under the seating area. Bed linen and towels are provided, along with a hair dryer, bathrobes and toiletries (homemade goats' milk soap and shampoo bar, made by a friend of the family), plus a welcome pack that includes homemade biscuits or cake, coffee, tea, milk, sugar, granola, yoghurt, bread, butter, jam and marmalade.

A small wood-burning stove and an electric heater help to keep you warm and toasty, while outside the wood-fired bath tub is perfect for a late-night wallow while looking at the stars.  There's also firepit-cum-barbecue, a pizza oven and an outdoor dining area for some memorable al fresco feasts and a pair of Adirondack chairs to sink into afterwards.

It's all so beautifully done, and the surroundings so enchanting, that you may decide to just stick most of the day pottering about the farm and the nearby countryside – it's a short walk to the village pub, The Harrow in West Ilsley, and there are plenty of walks in the surrounding area, with the Ridgeway long-distance footpath just a 10-minute walk away. But if you do decide you want to go further, then both Oxford and Highclere Castle - of Downton Abbey fame – are only 30 minutes away by car.

The Owner Says

Welcome to Little Fleece shepherds hut at Folly Farm in an AONB on the North Wessex Downs near the Ridgeway National Trail. Far reaching views over the fields can be seen from the hut which is set in the paddock next to the farmhouse but you are completely private.

Little Fleece was lovingly made by skilled craftspeople in Somerset and is equipped with everything you need. David, Jane and daughter Tory run a working beef, sheep and arable farm. Cattle graze in the field behind the paddock during the summer months and the sheep will be grazing on the farm wherever the grass is tastiest! A game shoot runs on the farm September to February.

Little Fleece is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life with no TV or Wi-Fi, so come and recharge in the Berkshire countryside and reconnect with nature. Listen to the farm animals, wild birds, at dawn/dusk as you may see the farm’s resident barn owl. Walk, cycle and explore the local area. Unwind with a book and a cuppa and the homemade biscuits provided, or for the ultimate relaxation, lounge in the outdoor wood-fired freshwater bath tub with a glass of bubbly.

wholesome & lovely

We couldn’t have asked for anywhere better, David & Jane (& Tory) are the loveliest family and 10/10 hosts. Everything about the stay was amazing, all the little touches were so noticeable from the homemade little sheep shortbread biscuits, to the handpicked flowers. The BBQ & wood fired hot tub was easy to use (once we got going) Jane left her number and was so helpful when we got stuck! I couldn’t recommend this place more for people who want a relaxing time away. Thank you again Jane & David - we will definitely be back for another stay! X

The perfect getaway!

What an amazing place! My wife and I visited last weekend and it was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle London. The fresh country air and picturesque views left us wishing we could stay forever! The cabin is cosy and has everything we needed. When you initially think of staying in a Shepard’s hut you may think you’ll have to compromise on comfort. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised! Every space is maximised and it has every amenity needed to make your stay nothing short of perfect!! The hosts are absolutely wonderful. Really welcoming and treated us to the best shortbread biscuits ever! Couldn’t recommend little fleece more highly!

Wonderfully relaxing stay

I can’t recommend Little Fleece highly enough. We spent a wonderfully relaxing couple of nights there and enjoyed every moment. It was peaceful, calming and very restful. Jane and David were wonderful hosts and the Shepherd’s Hut was spotless and luxurious. We had a fantastic walk along the Ridgeway, followed by dinner in the open air and the best sleep in months!

Amazing, amazing, amazing!

I cannot recommend a stay at Little Fleece enough! We arrived on a Friday evening to a lovely warm welcome from all the family and after a tour of the hut's state of the art equipment were left to settle in. The pizza oven was a true novelty and my husband loved being able to bake his homemade pizzas on a traditional oven in an outdoor setting. The wood-fired outdoor bath was another hit. It's roomy, comfy and the setting and views of the starry night sky were super romantic. Indoors, the hut is beautifully kitted out and has everything you need for a self-catering stay. Thank you for the home-baked goods too, they were delicious! We would thoroughly recommend a stay at Little Fleece to anyone who wants to enjoy some time getting back to nature. Thanks again!

Beautiful and relaxing break

We had a lovely stay at the Little Fleece. The hut was spotless and everything there that you would need for your stay (and more!) The outdoor bath is such a nice bonus too, even in the rain. The hut is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, a perfect getaway! Jane and David were great hosts and we hope to return again soon.

An incredibly peaceful, warm & welcoming country retreat

Our stay at Little Fleece, Folly Farm was a magical one. The hosts thought of every detail, from the authentic luxury linen sheets to the tiny glass sheep statues, mapped walking routes and local BBQ selections. They made us feel at home in the beautiful British countryside and helped us fall in love with staycationing in the UK. Who would have thought the smell of fresh air would taste so sweet? Returning home after this picturesque setting and romantic fire pit and the outdoor tub was simply heartbreaking! Our only regret was not staying longer. Highly recommend Little Fleece to couples looking for a romantic scenic break. Kat & Luke

Dear Kat and Luke,
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We’re so glad you enjoyed your staycation at Little Fleece in the Berkshire countryside. As you enjoyed the sheep and small lambs in the paddock you may like to come back at lambing time in March when there will be lots of newborn lambs on the farm.

Perfect stay in a lovely countryside setting

Beautiful shepherds hut furnished and equipped to the highest standard and a lovely warm welcome on arrival. The setting is perfect and having the wood fired hot tub to relax in under the stars was a real highlight, we even saw the resident barn owl flying around in the evening which was a delight to see. The hut was warm and cosy and bed very comfortable. Easy access to lots of walks and fabulous countryside views. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it.

Nice and quiet.

Amazing experience!! It is the perfect place to disconnect from the routine, walk through the countryside and at the same time, it is close enough to many places of interest, mainly Oxford. David, Jane, and Tory were very friendly and they answered all of our questions. The hut is very well equipped and we really recommend the pizza oven. We will definitely be back, there is a hot tub we have to try.
