A canalside pub not far from Edinburgh with waterfront views, good food and comfortable rooms.

If, like us, you tend to associate canalside inns with narrowboats neatly moored outside with England, prepare to be surprised by this Central Scotland hideaway. Just seven miles from Edinburgh – and even closer to its airport – sits a heritage inn in the conservation village of Ratho, overlooking a stone bridge. Reclining right on the Union Canal, which runs from the remarkable Falkirk Wheel to Edinburgh city centre. Based here you can take boat trips out towards Linlithgow, cycle along the canal into Edinburgh, or even hike east to pick up the John Muir Way long distance walking trail.

You don’t even have to fight with your fellow guests for a waterfront view, as each of inn’s 4 individually designed guest rooms gazes out towards the canal and its aquatic wildlife. They all have flatscreen TVs with Freeview, wifi and tea – and coffee-making facilities, but each one is different: one– the smallest – has an elegant 4-poster, another a brass bedstead, while another is simple and predominantly white. The largest room has a free-standing bath. Breakfast is superb, with a generous Full Scottish with black pudding and potato scones and American pancakes as an alternative.

Downstairs there is proper local pub life as the inn is at the heart of the local community, with a terrace overlooking the canal for dreamy summer evenings and cosy fires inside for the depths of winter. The menu is well above standard pub grub, with homegrown vegetables and pork that they rear themselves setting the tone. It’s beautifully presented too, and the service is spot-on. You could kick off with some Hopetoun Estate pheasant (it’s close enough for the bird to have flown awkwardly in on its own) and Ayrshire bacon terrine, before tucking into a perfectly cooked Borders beef ribeye with handcut chips and a spicy peppercorn sauce. They have Scottish ales on tap, but there is cider and bitter too if you’re missing the quintessential English canal experience, and families might like to know that they have a large wooden playboat in their lovely beer garden. No surprise that they have won an award for something or other virtually every year for the last seven years, and were AA Scottish Pub of the Year a few years back.
