  • Chic Urban Bolthole
A luxurious and spacious self-catering Edinburgh townhouse with on-site parking and a south-facing garden

The hospitable owners of this stylish Edinburgh self-catering property call this pristine Victorian villa a 'personal hotel' – and that's a good way to describe this detached, six-bedroom townhouse, which sleeps up to a dozen people in the utmost comfort and is perfectly positioned for seeing the sights of Edinburgh, Owners Paul and John have made it their mission to offer visitors to the city as comfortable an environment as possible, making you feel like a native of the city  while you're here and laying on as much or as little as you need to make your stay memorable.

The house itself is modern yet traditional in style, with period features mixing with a soothing grey decor, high quality fabrics and book-packed shelves; Paul and John are keen travellers and the ambience of the house is enhanced by objects and knick-knacks brought back from their travels around the world. There's a rather cheffy kitchen, with double sinks, oven and hob, dishwasher and vast fridge. plus a dining table in the bright and airy Orangery that can seat up to 12 people. The spacious living room has an open fire and a Sonos sound system, and there's a Smart  TV in the so-called 'Media Room', complete with a Netflix, DVDs and games consoles for bored teenagers and rainy days. The house also has a secluded walled garden with outdoor seating, an Egg barbecue, wood-fired pizza oven and a wood-burning stove to keep you toasty on cool evenings. There's even a summerhouse with its own gym equipment and yoga mats – and a couple of bikes to borrow.

The six bedrooms are all en-suite and very plush, with generously sized  beds with good quality mattresses and linen, and deluxe bathrooms with power showers, underfloor heating and White Company toiletries; a couple also have a cast-iron roll-top bath. One bedroom has a huge bed and its own sitting area and uninterrupted views across to Arthur's seat and Salisbury Craggs.

94DR has lots of parking but once here you don't really need a car since it's very well placed for exploring the city centre, which is a leisurely stroll or a short bus- or bike-ride away. You can visit the Castle, stroll through the elegant New Town, the winding lanes of the old town and the pedestrian-friendly Grassmarket, or indulge in a spot of shopping along Princes and George Street, safe in the knowledge that at the end of a day, your extremely stylish temporary home is waiting for you.

Finally, if you prefer to be looked after a bit, for an extra charge Paul and John can rustle up all manner of treats above and beyond the scope of most self-catering properties, including breakfast and other meals; they'll also stock the bar, fridge and everything else to your requirements on request. In fact they are the all-round ideal hosts – friendly, knowledgeable and eager to help you make the most of your time here. Why would you stay anywhere else?

Cool styling, warm welcome

Carefully styled yet effusively welcoming, this smart guesthouse is a real find. The rooms are pristine, in palates of red, white and grey (at least the ones I saw were), there's a small sitting room with a well-chosen library and an airy breakfast room (with a small garden) where delicious bespoke breakfasts are cooked in front of you. Also a lovely dog. The front rooms look out onto windswept Arthur's Seat and the university halls of residence, which are five minutes' walk. I shall be returning!
