Drunken Duck Inn
UK England North West England Cumbria
Situated on a rustic hill between Ambleside and Hawkshead, the Drunken Duck Inn offers a real mix of experiences, with a very appealing set of rooms and the benefit of a top-notch gastropub on the premises. Contemporary colours and boutique furnishings are standard, even in the most basic rooms – it’s a 400-year-old building, so these are a bit tight on space, though you’ll never be anything less than comfortable. Other rooms are bigger, some located in a separate building across the courtyard, and most have great views over the fells, not least the stunning open- beamed Garden Room with its own balcony. As for the food, people drive from far and wide to eat at here, which serves contemporary gastro fare that’s strong on local sourcing and seasonal dishes and flavours – think rabbit, leek and bacon terrine or Lancashire cheese soufflé followed by chalk stream trout or venison suet pudding. Meanwhile, the really welcoming bar specialises in the inn’s own Barngates Brewery beers, most quirkily named after the old pub dogs (Tag Lag, Cracker, and so on).
