This legendary North Norfolk inn continues to prosper, with good food and comfortable rooms

A couple of decades ago, The Hoste Arms almost single-handedly turned the postcard-pretty village of Burnham Market into one of the hottest tourist spots and most coveted residences in Norfolk – second-home owners have now snaffled up over half the village, and a well-heeled crew they are too. The pub was not only well known for its food, but also for its power to pull an upmarket crowd from all over the country.  It's still a pretty fancy place to stay, with its own spa and wedding venue. But we rather like the fact that the latest owners have toned it all down a bit, turning the Hoste back into what it was originally – a great country pub with good food and comfortable rooms that we hope continues to prosper.

Most of all, The Hoste Arms is a supremely comfortable and even homely place to stay, right in the centre of the village and with 45 rooms divided between its main buildings and an annexe, Vine House, just across the green. It's nicest to be in the original hotel, but wherever you end up the guest rooms are well-equipped, spacious and with large bathrooms. All are different, though they all have the sort of Baroque Contemporary style that characterises the hotel throughout. The Vine House rooms are a bit simpler.  All in all staying at The Hoste feels like a bit of a treat, but it doesn't have to hard on the pocket, with its 'Classic' rooms starting at around £130 a night and its top-level 'Divine' rooms sill coming in at less than £200 a night.

The food is high-end pub food, from fancy bar snacks to sharing plates and main courses than run the range from pub classics (steaks, fish and chips, ox cheek shepherds pie) to things like bouillabaisse of local fish or haunch of local venison. The nice thing is you can enjoy the same menu in the front bar, the posher restaurant or in the lovely walled garden out the back.

Finally Burnham Market is a great place to spend a few days or a long weekend, bristling with good restaurants and pubs, and just a few miles from the sea at Burnham Deepdale and Brancaster, where there are more good pubs and restaurants - as indeed there are along the whole of the North Norfolk Coast. The beaches are eminently strollable, and you can go seal-watching at nearby Blakeney, birdwatching at Holme-next-the-Sea or just explore the beach and estate at Holkham; and some of the nearby villages are divine. You will be back, we guarantee it!

Stylish & Welcoming!

The Hoste is a 4 star boutique hotel located in one of Norfolk's prettiest villages, Burnham Market, just a few miles away from the beautiful North Norfolk coast. Stylish and welcoming and serving delicious seasonal, locally-sourced food with an extensive wine cellar, the restaurant is open to non-residents.

a much loved favourite

We go back here at least once a year. It is well situated in a vibrant village with very good amenities (shops, cash points, restaurants, take outs, butchers, bakers, no candle stick makers, but a shop with a surprising range of hats and wellies!).

The Hoste has a reliable restaurant - nothing too fancy just food we like to eat. Service is usually good if sometimes slow when busy. Watch out for the wine list though - can be pricey. Good desserts.

The rooms are a high standard and all different.Ask what is available and say if you have a preference. The ones in the old building above the restaurant are a bit noisy if you are early to bed. The hotel is dog friendly and has several rooms with small terraces.

We generally go for one of their cottages though. Same price as a double room in the hotel but you get three en suites. Much better if you have dogs as the all have gardens. Decor is the same standard as the hotel and we find them very comfortable. Can also save you a bit as there is a fully equipped kitchen so easy to have the odd meal in or take out. Easier parking at the cottages than the hotel as well.

Main gripes - car parking at the Hoste, price of drinks, not the cheapest.

Good things - comfort, atmosphere, good food, very well placed mid way along the north Norfolk coast

Top tips: try the cottages, ask the staff - they try to help

Overall -we always recommend the Hoste.
