- Boutique Country Hotel
It’s hard to beat the location of this combined restaurant, pub and hotel, which backs straight onto the marshes, lagoons and creeks of the North Norfolk Coast. It’s something of a local landmark, a special place to eat and also to stay, with seven airy, attractively decorated, en-suite guest rooms in the main building, and eight dog-friendly ‘garden rooms’ at the back with sedum-roof to blend with the marshes beyond; these have thoughtfully provided wooden-floored entrance halls for dog beds and muddy boots, and their own terraces for sitting out and enjoying the marsh and sea views. All of the rooms are spacious and contemporary, with a blue-green decor inspired by the seascape beyond. Some have sea views and the top-notch ‘Room at the Top’ is split over two levels and has its own viewing telescope to take in the best views of the coastline. Whether you stay in the main building or the garden rooms, all the rooms have large comfy beds, Smart TVs, digital radios and WiFi and Nespresso machines.
The White Horse also have a great selection of guest ales at their bar including some from their very own Brancaster Brewery just up the road, and the restaurant is one of the best on a coast that’s not exactly short of good places to eat, with – as you might expect – excellent fresh fish and seafood, including local mussels, crab and lobster, served either in the pub itself or the delightful modern conservatory at the back, which makes the most of the property’s position overlooking the sea.
Certainly it’s the location that makes the White Horse special, with a short stroll down to pick up the Norfolk Coastal Path at the bottom of the garden making it a perfect location for dog owners, walkers, cyclists or indeed anyone who wants to make the explore this unique stretch of coast. And if you’re looking for somewhere else to stay down the Norfolk coast it’s worth knowing that the same family own the excellent The King's Head at Letheringsett near Holt, as well as The Farmhouse at Redcoats and The Fox at Willian in Hertfordshire.
