There's cute, romantic and quirky, and then there's Townfoot Byre, a bijou little Lake District suite for a couple that's been fashioned from nothing less than an ancient animal shelter in an atmospheric 300-year-old farmhouse. Not that you'd know its origins when you clap eyes on your bolthole for the next few days, because starting with the moss-grown steps leading to the solid oak door, it's a true rustic delight.
The door opens directly into the bedroom, with its rough, white-plaster walls and low, wooden beams. King-sized bed, oak furniture, a table for two, and a wall-mounted TV – there's Wifi too – complete the set-up, while a tiny kitchenette provides fridge, toaster, microwave and kettle. Everything you might need to prepare for a day out on the fells is provided in a breakfast basket including bread, cereals, jams and coffee. The original stone staircase winds up and around – like in a church tower – to a very nicely appointed first-floor bathroom with a large walk-in shower and a view to die for through another original window. The low door and ceiling, and narrow staircase, won't be for everyone, so bear that in mind.
That's it for facilities, though there is EV charging and complimentary access to a local health club for pool, sauna and gym. However, the location is second to none – hidden up a side valley, Troutbeck, from the main tourist centre of Windermere and only a short drive from Ambleside. Or you can walk right from the door – not only across the tops and down to the lake, but also up to the high fells or down into the gentle valley. There are two pubs within walking distance – the Mortal Man is a famous local spot, with pub food and a great beer garden, or there are fancier meals at the Queen's Head. And then it's back along the quiet lanes, under the stars, to your bed in a byre and a peaceful night in one of the Lake District's more unusual retreats.
