The Old Millhouse is a large, high-end holiday home that's been designed for stylish and sumptuous stays in Scotland. It's located in the town of Dalkieth, just 20 minutes south of Edinburgh and the same distance from the city's airport, and yet it has a serene setting, with more than three acres of mature, landscaped, riverside gardens. This historic, four-storey, stone-walled house has been restored and furnished to balance modern comfort with its heritage charm.
There are five en-suite bedrooms spread across the top three storeys of the house. Four have king-size beds, although two can be styled as twins, and travel cots or a small fold-out bed can be added. The flexible layout of the house means it suits groups of friends, couples and families equally well. Downstairs, the sociable spaces are the bright, light Orangery, which combines a lounge and dining room, the appropriately cosy Snug, which features a classic corner bar, and the comfy Drawing Room, up one level overlooking the garden, where there's an open fire. Plus, of course, there’s an extremely well-equipped kitchen.
Whether you use the kitchen or not is another matter, because one of the wonderful things about staying at The Old Millhouse is owner Sally’s concierge service, which offers a number of packages to make staying here completely hassle-free. She’ll chill champagne for your arrival, arrange for a private chef, and book days out with trusted local experts. Whether it’s the sights of historic Edinburgh city you want to see, or to sample local golf courses (there are said to be 25 within 20 miles), Sally knows who to call. If you opt for it, the house will also be tidied and cleaned while you’re out and about.
That means you and your fellow guests can return to enjoy a wee dram by the fire in The Drawing Room, or take a dip in the spa pool outside on the terrace before bed. And a comfortable night is pretty much guaranteed. Like everything else in this house, the beds have been well chosen and dressed, with Hypnos mattresses, Egyptian cotton sheets and thoughtful bedside lighting in each individually-designed room, making them feel like luxurious boutique hotel rooms. It's self-catering at the top of the scale, and as such, worth considering for your next big family holiday or group get-together.

The house is about 20 minutes' drive from Edinburgh or Edinurgh Airport follow sat nav or signs to Dalkieth and onto Newmills Road. Look for a large stone entrance with an archway to a care home on the right. Then 400 yards later, also on the right, you will see brown wooden gates at the entrance to The Old Millhouse, just before a pedestrian crossing.
The No 3 , leaves from just outside our drive, or take a 5 min drive to Eskbank Train Station for trains into Edinburgh (15 mins) or visit the Scottish Borders, a lovely train ride . (40 mins) We also have our own Wilbur and Darren who can drive you anywhere you would like to go.Features
