The Hoxton, Southwark
London's coolest place to stay south of the river – and dog-friendly too!The latest addition to the burgeoning Hoxton group, which has two other hotels in London as well as Amsterdam, Paris and a couple of US cities, this Southwark hotel is maybe the coolest place to stay south of the river that you'll find. It's in a great neighbourhood, two minutes' from the river and the Thames path which you can take in one direction to nearby Tate Modern, the Globe and Borough Market and in the other to the South Bank and Westminster. The immediate neighbourhood, too, is one of the city's most historic but also one of its most recently regenerated, so you'll find some of London's most characterful pubs cheek-by-jowl with cutting-edge bars, cafés and indy shops – all within a short walk of the hotel.
They have 195 rooms spread across 14 floors, ranging from admittedly small doubles to lovely light corner rooms that are the spacious match of any hotel in London; bathrooms are reasonable sizes whichever size room you have and all have tea- and coffee-making facilities and water as complimentary (you can buy drinks and other essentials from reception at non-mini-bar prices), along with comfy beds, Freeview TVs and good wifi throughout. The first and second floors are home to their dog-friendly rooms, and dogs go free, as well as being provided with a dog bowl, bed, treats and toy and a dog-friendly guide to the local area – something all the Hoxton hotels do. Rather sweetly, they also tend to ask the dog's name so they can give him/her a proper sort of welcome. The ground floor lobby, bar and restaurant all merge into one and are a deliberately sociable space, with a vibe that is a bit gentler than its Shoreditch cousin; dogs aren't allowed in the ground floor Albie restaurant, or in the top flooor Seabird restaurant (which is worth a look for the views alone), but you can hang out with your dog in the ground-floor bar or in the comfy (and quieter) mezzanine bar, where you can also order food.
All in all Hoxton Southwark is great place to stay in a fabulous location, and not bad value either. They will also make your dog feel as at home as you do, and there are good off-lead walking opportunities on the nearby riverside path.
