Situated among the well-heeled, leafy streets of Camden Town as it runs into the even leafier streets of Primrose Hill, Mason & Fifth is by any standards a terrific place to base yourself on a trip to the London. It describes itself as a 'boutique guesthouse', and its peaceful situation, in an elegant period house, not far from Regents Park the Zoo, the views of Primrose Hill and the shops and restaurants of Camden, can hardly be bettered if you want to maintain a bit of a distance between yourself and the mayhem of the West End. Not only that, its comfortable and versatile accommodation makes it a perfect and very desirable spot to go back to at the end of the day – at what by London standards are moderate nightly rates.

Mason & Fifth has another, older branch in Bermondsey, south of the river, and both properties specialise in catering to visitors who want a bit more flexibility to their stay, with their own kitchen facilities and a more homely feel than a regular hotel, whether it's for a short break or longer. As they suggest, they aim to offer you the chance to live like a local for a few days, weeks or even months. The Primrose Hill location has 61 studios, some of which are mezzanine in style, with a living area ‘downstairs’ with desk, kitchen and seating, and the bed on a platform above (not advised for those of limited mobility!), while others are larger and all on one level, and have a sofa as well. They all have all with en-suite shower rooms, digital radios and Smart TVs, fast WiFi, and the kitchen facilities include a hob and microwave, fridge, along with coffee and tea, water, milk and other essentials.

Overall the building is a very pleasant place to be, with a large basement rooms divided into several cool public areas - lounges, workspaces and a large and well-equipped kitchen (with a proper oven). Everything is both ergonomically and stylishly designed, with a modern-retro feel that continues out into a lovely secluded private garden and yoga studio. They lay out a nice breakfast down here between 8am and 10am each morning so you don't entirely have to fend for yourself, and there's a communal vibe that is both deliberate and infectious – it's lightly applied but there if you want it. All in all, you'll be very happy you decided to make Mason & Fifth your home-from-home while you're in London.
