Welcoming guests since 1920, the Pride of Paddington is a traditional, cosy watering hole just a two-minute walk from the station and tube. A popular spot with locals who fancy relaxing with a pint, the pub is also home to well-priced guest rooms and an apartment, hosting visitors from around the world who fancy something smaller and more personal than a chain hotel. Upstairs, the 12 bedrooms were recently refurbished, converting the space from a hostel to a stylish place to lay your head for a night (or few). As you make your way up, pictures of the capital hang on the walls alongside images of Paddington, the marmalade-loving bear from Peru who was discovered at the nearby station.

Choose from Cosy, Comfy or Deluxe bedrooms: each offers varying degrees of space, but all have certain features in common like chic interiors, an en-suite with a shower, a flat-screen TV, air-conditioning, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Go for a roomy Deluxe (king or twins are available) and enjoy a sofa to kick back on that can also be transformed into a second bed if you're visiting as a family. If you fancy bringing your pooch, that's fine too. It's also worth noting the pub has a generously sized apartment at the top of the building with two bedrooms (one double and another with two singles), plus a lounge, dining area, galley kitchen and two large bathrooms (one with a bath).

Back downstairs, the menu features classics like fish and chips and a range of burgers, plus small plates like Quorn™ vegan wings, jalapeño hummus with crudites and flatbread, and crispy salt and pepper squid. On warm days, sit outside and watch the world go by – it's a bustling part of town. Mere moments from Paddington underground, you're well connected with the rest of the capital: no less than five lines are at your fingertips – Elizabeth, Circle, Hammersmith & City, District and Bakerloo. On foot, Portobello Road with its market and colourful houses is easily reachable, as is Hyde Park – follow The Serpentine Lake to Knightsbridge, head to Kensington Palace, or for something more chilled, recline on one of the many stripy deckchairs. Further afield, jump on a mainline train westwards for day trips to Oxford, Bath or Bristol – all are accessible in 1.25 hours or less. Then back to the comfort of the Pride of Paddington to plan your next adventure.
