Owners of 94DR Paul and John are the ideal hosts – friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, with a clear love for their city. They've created a stylish haven, a place to relax after a day sightseeing in Edinburgh. Set in a detached villa on one of the main roads into town, this sharply designed boutique guesthouse offers six individually designed bedrooms named after malt whiskies. And let's not forget the additional 3/4 bunk space, aptly called 'Wee Dram' – it can be booked alongside the Lagavulin or Tamdhu bedroom to provide the perfect family suite. They even have books, DVDs, games and an Xbox to help keep little ones entertained.
The B&B takes its moniker from the property's address, and is modern yet traditional – period features mix with soothing muted grey decor and high quality fabrics. The bathrooms are deluxe, with power showers and underfloor heating, some with cast iron roll tops. Stay in a 'Couture' room and enjoy a huge bed, sitting area and uninterrupted views to Arthur's seat and Salisbury Craggs. Opt for 'Bespoke' and be greeted with natural wool and tweeds.
Breakfast isn't an afterthought here, it takes centre stage. And no wonder, given Paul is a trained chef. Take a seat in the bright and airy orangery, then go ahead and order the likes of a full Scottish or eggs royale. Produce is seasonal, local and organic, and there are daily specials to choose from. Prefer to sleep in? Boxes can be brought to the room, they even hold a pop up dining experience - Under The Table - twice a month. If you're planning an event, keep this place in mind – the chaps can help you organise any kind of bash and will open up their home to you. Decide between the orangery, drawing room or walled garden and feast on anything from a buffet to a tasting menu.
A leisurely stroll (alternatively catch a bus or borrow one of the B&Bs bikes free of charge) will lead you to any number of attractions – visit the Castle, stroll through the elegant new town, the winding lanes of the old town and the pedestrian-friendly Grassmarket, or indulge in a spot of shopping along Princes and George Street. Back at 94DR, sit back with a drink from the honesty bar and let Paul and John recommend a restaurant for dinner.
6 variously styled rooms – Couture (Bowmore & Caol Ila), Bespoke (Lagavulin & Tamdhu) and Tailored (Aberlour & Macallan). Plus, for a family suite there's the Wee Dram which can be booked alongside either Lagavulin or Tamdhu.
