Everyone comes to Newquay for the beaches and coast, but there’s a gorgeous rural hinterland, too, concealing special, luxury hideaway places like Tresillian House – a Regency-period Cornish manor house set in its own lush grounds.

The Manor House itself sits in 22 acres, with its own lake, tennis court, gym and walled garden. Accommodation within is as grand and refined as you’d expect – eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, log-burning fires, antique furniture, and a dining table you can set for twenty. This would be a spectacular location for a special get-together, with an entrance, reception and book-filled drawing rooms that have a real sense of occasion, and charming, country-chic bedrooms that are filled with light and boast lovely garden views. The gravelled driveways, manicured lawns, and open fields beyond really do speak of a different, more stately time – after a night or two in these surroundings, you’ll soon feel ‘to the manor born’. Dogs are allowed at this property, too.

Two other self-catering properties on the estate offer more options – either for a standalone stay or as part of a larger group staying at the manor house. The Laundry Cottage was once just that – hence the enormous Tudor fireplace, which used to heat the water – and is a cosy retreat for a couple, with its Shaker-style kitchenette, rustic vibe, and pretty, sheltered courtyard. Or there’s a much larger alternative, across from the main house, in the shape of the old Apple Store – now a splendid, contemporary six-bedroom annexe with wooden beams and floors, five bathrooms, a courtyard garden, and a children’s playground. The open-plan living area, with windows on all sides and a sweeping dining table, makes a hugely impressive statement, and would be a wonderful place to host a celebratory dinner.

The whole rural property is stunning, whichever self-catering option you choose, and it seems a mile away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. Well, under five miles, to be exact, with Fistral, Crantock and Holywell Bay beaches just a short drive away, and the bright lights of Newquay itself close enough for shopping trips, restaurant meals and nights out.
