A former fishing village morphed into a no-frills seaside town, Sheringham makes a perfect base for this stretch of the gorgeous North Norfolk Coast, and by happy accident, it's also home to Hannah Wessely, whose recently refurbished Cliff Cottage is just a two-minute walk from the seafront and comfortably sleeps four people. It's a delightful place to stay, with an authentic coastal feel throughout – sunny, light and airy, and decorated in a style that echoes perfectly its seaside location, with bright, contemporary furniture, and white walls hung with marine charts and fishing images to remind you at every turn that you are in salty Sheringham. Downstairs, there's a well-equipped kitchen, with everything you need for rustling up a full spread and an oval table for four to eat it at, a comfortable living room and a bedroom with twin beds. Upstairs there's a further double bedroom, while beyond the sliding doors of the living room you can relax in the cottage's sunlit courtyard garden. There's also a washing machine, WiFi (EE Fibre Plus) and a Smart TV for cosy evenings in.
Hannah lives next door with her young daughter, Florence, a couple of cats and a sausage dog called Cherry, so you have the reassurance of knowing they're always there to deal with any issues. Best of all she's also on hand to dispense advice about the town and region, which she loves to share with visitors. Sheringham itself is a friendly, old-fashioned but lively resort that buzzes with activity during summer. There's a long shingle beach when the tide is high, revealing a tempting stretch of golden sand when it goes out; the town also has a great local museum – the 'Mo' – and lots of good places to eat and drink, plus you can take the North Norfolk steam railway from here to chintzy Holt a little way inland, stopping off along the way at Sheringham Park, a glorious National Trust property that sits at the top of one of the area's few hills. Along the coast there are the beaches of East and West Runton in one direction, and the marshes and windy walks of Salthouse, Cley and Blakeney in the other – not to mention the seal colonies of Blakeney Point – while the Norfolk Coast Path virtually runs past the property. All in all you really couldn't be in a better position for exploring this rather special northeastern corner of Norfolk.
