Who says you can't combine a London city break with a stay in the great outdoors? Set among the lakes, woodlands and waterways of Lee Valley Regional Park, this YHA offers a different take on your usual hostel in the capital, yet you're just 25 minutes by train from Liverpool Street.
Spread across six timber-clad lodges, five house the bedrooms (sleeping up to 118 in total), and each has a kitchen and dining space. Options include private rooms – some en-suite – dormitory-style with bunk beds, and hiring an entire building.
The main lodge is home to the reception, a café for breakfast and evening meals, plus a bar, lounge and dining area. Free parking is a bonus – hard to come by this close to London. But the real attraction is the location: right on the edge of the 10,000-acre park, you're perfectly placed for walking, cycling and other activities such as birdwatching and ice skating at the indoor rink. The famous Lee Valley White Water Centre – built for the 2012 Olympics – is nearby, offering swimming, rafting, paddleboarding and kayaking, and you can sail and fish in the lakes.
Cheshunt station is just a couple of minutes' walk away, making it easy to spend the day exploring London's museums, markets and landmarks before retreating to the peace and quiet of the hostel.
