Set on the top two floors of an eighteenth-century house in the small West Sussex town of Petworth, this self-catering apartment is a unique place to stay in the heart of the South Downs National Park, artfully fashioned from a Victorian photographer's studio and with a beautiful, light-flooded penthouse space at the top of the building. The apartment would be worth staying in alone for its ultra-handy location close to the considerable delights of the National Trust's Petworth House, which is just a few minutes' walk away; and Petworth itself is a really great little market town, surrounded by beautiful countryside and with plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants to keep you occupied whatever the weather. However, the apartment itself is also stunning, with three double bedrooms – two doubles, one twin – which sleep up to six people, and the unique vaulted, double-height original studio space which serves as a living area with a wooden-floored dining area (with space for up to 8 people) and a contemporary, open-plan kitchen off to the side, equipped with gas hob, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. The first floor bedrooms at the front look over a quiet cobbled street, while the rear bedroom looks over the property's own small courtyard. There's a family bathroom, with a bath and separate shower, and a further shower room which can either serve as an en-suite to the master bedroom or be accessed from the third bedroom.
The other thing we like about The Penthouse is that the owners run an art gallery, so each room usually has a changing selection of pictures on the wall. And finally, there's no need to worry too much about food in advance, as there's a local store open until 10pm every evening for all the essentials, and the nearby Hungry Guest deli and café has just won Great Taste Awards’ 'Deli of the Year' for the third year running. There is free parking overnight and in the evening, and at other times it costs no more than £1.40 a day. We think it's the perfect place to escape to on a Friday evening from London, whether you want to yomp across the Downs (there are loads of nearby walks), just loaf about in Petworth itself – or head down to the nearby coast at Chichester or West Wittering, just beyond.
