The waterfront Granary Wharf area, behind the train station, has had a swish facelift in recent years, with developments like the DoubleTree – formerly the Mint Hotel – at the heart of its new-found popularity. Every big night out should include a drink at the top-floor SkyLounge bar, but the rooms here are pretty classy too, complete with iMac TVs, MP3 docks and walk-in showers. It’s contemporary without being over-the-top boutiquey, and has floor-to-ceiling windows that make the most of the views (to guarantee a sweeping city panorama, shell out the extra for a club room or a suite on the higher floors). The hotel’s City Cafe is well regarded too, and there are canalside drinks and dining in summer.
