A dog-friendly riverside hotel and restaurant in the heart of Dartmoor National Park

Mill End Hotel offers 21 individually designed rooms, six acres of gardens, lounges warmed by open fires and elegant afternoon teas. It sounds every inch the country house hotel – and indeed it is. But it’s a very Dartmoor version, embracing the outdoors by welcoming walkers and dog owners to stay. Its rooms and two-Rosette restaurant occupy a renovated 15th-century flour mill that was once powered by the River Teign, and it's this position on the riverbank that puts it on one of the best walking routes in the whole of the national park: one that takes you to Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo, just a mile or so away.

Mill End is elegant and stylish, but it’s not at all stuffy. For the muddy wellies and paws who love the location, there’s a handy boot room entrance which means you can get cleaned up before entering the hotel. There, you’ll find three cosy guest lounges which are classic in style but with a few quirky touches. This feeling carries through to most of the guest rooms, some of which have bold feature walls that add character to their comfort. Others feel more traditional, but all share a standard of comfort that's elevated further by quality linen and towels, well-chosen toiletries, tea- and coffee-making facilities and homemade biscuits.

There’s a real range of rooms and suites to choose from here. Some are dog-friendly and some are fido-free. There are ground-floor rooms that open directly to the gardens and there’s a first-floor suite with a balcony. Some of the suites work well for families and others are simply luxuriously spacious for a couple to spread out in. One or two have a free-standing bath.

With a destination restaurant downstairs, eating in is the sensible option for dinner. A focus on provenance means you get a real taste of the area to complement the days you’ll spend out exploring. The Two Moors Way passes the hotel gardens and leads you along the riverbank – in one direction to the market town of Chagford and in the other towards Castle Drogo above the wooded Teign Gorge. A five-mile circular route takes you along the top and back down through the trees or vice-versa. Tackling it is the ideal way to build an appetite for the Devon afternoon tea that’s on offer back at this boutique hotel that really makes the most of its location in the heart of Dartmoor National Park.

Third visit in five months

Our 3rd visit in 5 months was for a very good reason; and it's because Mill End is a really nice, chilled place with great food, great staff and great location. Oh, did I mention the food ? Yep, really nice. We will definately go back again, probably later in the year or if a special offer apprears in my inbox. All staff at Mill End are the best, even the ones hidden away !

Oh wow!

Lovely old mill converted to a luxury hotel (and yes, the water wheel is still there, but not in use). Comfortable en suite bedrooms. VERY good quality meals (breakfast and evening). Staff were truly excellent, nothing we asked was too much bother for them and they were really friendly chatty and nice to us. Restaurant staff kept a close eye on what was going on and were very quickly at your table after you had finished each course.

Great Devon hotel

We picked the Mill End Hotel for a few days purely by chance after a last minute decision to visit Devon. Well what a pick - spotlessly clean, friendly staff and super comfortable. A jewel of a hotel with sparkling touches like a wonderful dining experience. Delicious breakfasts and stunning location. Can’t recommend enough and we will definitely be back.

Perfection

I love this hotel. As soon as you walk in you feel relaxed and calm. The staff are a credit to Mill End, without exception they are warm, welcoming and helpful and do seem to actually like being there. The beds and pillows are comfy, the lounge cosy with a log burning stove. The food is absolutely outstanding, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. Milk End is not at all pretentious but very classy. This was our 5th visit and we will be definitely be back. Keep up the good work.

Our Perfect Birthday weekend at Mill End Hotel

A fabulous hotel in the most amazing part of the countryside. The entire experience was perfect!, great staff, comfortable rooms and excellent dining. We could not have wished for a better way to celebrate a birthday weekend. We took our lovely Border Collie, who was equally spoilt with the walks and dog treats left in our room. Simply A1 !

Hidden Gem

"A hidden gem" is an overused term when it comes to hotels but this one really is. Situated just outside the characterful small Dartmoor town of Chagford it is easily reached from major roads but nestles snugly in its own spacious grounds. We really couldn't find fault with any element of our stay. From the outside the hotel looked smart and welcoming and it was. All members of staff we encountered were friendly and proffessional. Our room was warm, immaculately presented and very comfortable. There was a relaxing lounge with a log burner, perfect for afternoon tea or pre dinner drinks. The restaurant was very well presented with white linen tablecloths and a pleasant ambience. The food was excellent. This was our first visit, we plan to return.

A perfect hotel in a lovely setting

From the moment we crossed the threshold the staff made us very welcome, the hotel is nicely decorated throughout and extremely clean and comfortable, we stayed in Dart which is a lovely spacious room with a big bathroom and a brilliant balcony. The food was delicious, varied and presented and served perfectly. We hope to return in the new year

A 5* Hotel

Lovely hotel with friendly, welcoming staff. Comfortable rooms and the most amazing food. Very pretty garden right by the river and pretty walks beside the river. Dog friendly rooms on ground floor with doors out to a small patio. Even a dog cleaning room with basin and towels provided. Enclosed dog area if needed. Can’t wait to go back!

Fantastic experience and location

This is a very nice hotel in a lovely location by the river with very good rooms. There are plenty of local walks to do around the hotel. As for the food they advertise this restaurant as 2 AA rosette. NO WAY. This is a 3 rosette restaurant and the food is excellent . After leaving Mill end we went to a well known castle hotel near Bristol and the restaurant has 3 AA rosettes. Well the food at Mill end is far superior than this hotel, So please Mill end apply for your 3rd AA rosette.

A Fabulous Small Hotel

This delightful small hotel wraps you in a warm hug and was a perfect destination for our one night getaway. The traditional old building is tucked away in beautiful Devonian countryside and is attractively decorated throughout. Our room, at the top of the hotel, was very characterful and comfortable with a pretty view and an elegantly functional en suite (lovely products). A nice touch, too, was the offer (in the room literature) of a choice of pillows and bedding to suit. Our dinner was fab...really delicious, well presented food from start to finish. Excellent wine and service. Good breakfast too. Finally, the staff were all great...helpful and friendly. A special place to stay and we hope to return.
