Nestled in the chocolate-box Devon village of North Bovey, Moorland View oozes charm, taste and character. A divine thatched cottage dating back to 1507, it's ideal for UK honeymoons and romantic breaks, and lives up to its name, with fantastic views of Dartmoor (you can sometimes spy the famous wild ponies on the moor). Carefully renovated in 2008, traditional craftspeople such as a thatcher, blacksmith and carpenter were engaged for its restoration, while locally-produced arts and crafts such as woven baskets, artwork and pottery complement exposed beams and stone walls. It's a labour of love that is all about ambience and detail, with owner Suzy ensuring it truly reflects its moorland setting.
There’s no shortage of home comforts either: a cosy living room with a wood-burning stove and stylish dining area, plus a kitchen stocked with everything you need for cooking a slap-up country breakfast or a roast. Among all the usual appliances, you'll also find a coffee machine and dishwasher. There’s WiFi throughout, a Sonos music system, and a clever pop-up home cinema for those evenings in. The master bedroom is the epitome of peaceful cosiness, with a to-die-for view, a king-size French bed and a vintage copper and tin slipper bath among the sumptuous fittings of the bathroom. The second bedroom has another super-comfy double bed made from Devon’s lambswool and a lovely raffia lampshade.
Suzy has thought of everything for the perfect romantic getaway. On arrival, guests will find a hamper of local goodies, wine, and even marshmallows to toast on the fire, along with maps and walking guides. Outside, the fragrant garden is a delightful, bee-and-bird-friendly sun-trap, planted with honeysuckle, jasmine, and old English roses and herbs, and there's also a hedgehog house and pond. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (blankets, bowls and towels are provided) and there’s a dedicated parking space at the front.
North Bovey village is a real gem, too. It boasts a cracking pub – the Ring of Bells – which has a great reputation for food. Just up the road is Bovey Castle, offering spa days, golf and fine dining. Your four-legged friend will also be pleased to know you're within easy reach of a multitude of walks across the moors. However, once you’ve sunken into the romantic and cosy environs of this charming cottage, you may well forget the rest of the world exists.
