The Derby Arms is a little different, and off the main tourist track, but is full of delights for those who visit. It is easily accessible from the A590 but, once you step through the doors, the rat race feels a million miles away. The cosy and inviting bar draws you in and, with its quirky mismatched furniture, it’s definitely a place to relax and feel comfortable. At the bar you’ll discover a good range of local beers, as well as popular classics, on tap. The menu offers a solid selection of traditional pub fayre with plenty of choice – plus there’s the infamous ‘design your own’ Derby burger to sample. The portions are generous so if you need a walk to work up an appetite, then how about Whitbarrow Scar? It’s not flat, but it’s not too adventurous either, and the views from the top are stunning, from the Lake District fells to the north to Morecambe Bay and, on a clear day, Blackpool Tower to the south. For a more sedate excursion try a visit to the garden nursery at Halecat House, or delightfully Georgian Grange-over-Sands, just a short drive away. They only have six en-suite bedrooms, so there’s no breakfast rush, and each room is spacious, comfortable and full of quirky and interesting furniture. And if one of your days happens to be a bit drizzly, then you can hide away in the games room and enjoy a game of pool, or simply curl up with a good book.
