Max and Susan Fischer have been in residence at this stunning Grade II-listed Manor House since 1988, and their care and attention to detail shines through. Their restaurant is Michelin-star territory, and unsurprisingly the accommodation matches. There are six traditional bedrooms in the main house, and whilst every effort's been made to ensure certain features are bang up-to-date (high thread Egyptian cotton bedding, fat mattresses, fluffy robes, contemporary bathrooms) the fabulous ornate plasterwork on the ceilings gives away the building's history. The remaining five rooms in the adjacent Garden House are more modern but just as luxurious, with the added advantage of their own courtyard from where you can admire Max's brilliant veg garden. Either way, you can't lose. Breakfast includes homemade granola and local eggs, bacon and sausages, and your welcome cuppa comes with homemade cake, taken in front of the roaring fire in winter or in the stunning garden in summer. With Chatsworth House a mere couple of miles away, this is a treat of a place to base yourselves for an utterly sybaritic night or two. Oh, and it might be posh, but it's really friendly and no one stands on ceremony.
