A wide range of self-catering holiday accommodation in a beautiful location in the heart of the Lake District.

Situated in the heart of Borrowdale, Manesty Holiday Cottages provides a perfect place to get away from it all in one of the most dramatic and yet accessible parts of the Lake District. It's just a short walk from Derwentwater, on the far side of which lies the small market town of Keswick. It couldn't be more rural, with most of its cottages enjoying views across Borrowdale to the fells beyond. There is a range of accommodation to choose from, ranging from large properties like the beautiful beamed old Manesty farmhouse, which sleeps 5–7 in five bedrooms, and Manesty Band, a Victorian barn conversion set on a rocky outcrop which sleeps 6-8 in four bedrooms, to cosy affairs for two like Cocklety How Studio and Manesty Dairy. There are also a couple of glamping options: Tommy Bit, a well-equipped shepherd's hut tucked away on its own that makes a perfect romantic retreat, with its own wood-burning stove, fold-down double bed, basic kitchen and barbecue/firepit, and a Retro Caravan that sleeps four on the edge of the woodland location shared with the very best of local wildlife, from red squirrels to tawny owls.

You couldn't be in a better position for exploring the Lakes beyond, just a short walk from Derwentwater and and right next to the southern path up Catbells. It's an easyish hike from Manesty with glorious views over Borrowdale and the lake. You could also walk or drive through the valley of Borrowdale, at the top of which is the rocky Honister Pass and the renowned Honister Slate Mines, or take the ferry across the lake to Keswick – the Adventure Capital of the Lake District and home to lots of pubs, shops and restaurants. Owners Alan and Cheryl couldn't be more friendly or helpful and have tons of suggestions for days out and things to see and do, although we have to admit that one of the nicest things about Manesty is that it's a great place in which to just stay put and enjoy the views – especially from the comfort of their rustic, wood-fired hot tub, cleverly positioned to make the most of the panorama over Borrowdale, so it feels very indulgent. Despite its bucolic location, Manesty is an easy place to reach, but – trust us – a very hard one to leave.

The Owner Says

Manesty stands at the foot of Cat Bells and Maiden Moor where the open fell meets the stone walls of the fields. It is built in the traditional Lakeland style, on a site chosen centuries ago for its sunny elevated position and its sweeping views across Borrowdale. Lying at the heart of the Lake District, it is the ideal base for a Cumbrian holiday whether walking or touring by car.
We offer Lake District self catering short breaks as well as week holidays all year round. We are a family business and are proud to share our home, where our family has lived for 6 generations, with visitors from all over the world.
We, the Leyland family, operate the cottages personally from our nearby home at Youdale Knot. Even after 180 years, though, our family are relative newcomers. Manesty’s history reaches back to ancient times, when it was the northern outpost of Furness Abbey’s wool producing empire.

Would like to visit again!

From the instant we booked our stay both Alan and Cheryl communicated amazingly, providing us with all the information we would need for our stay which made travelling and arriving at the location incredibly easy. The Tommy Bit hut is beautifully rustic with simple but sufficient amenities, but this was part of the charm. The view from the front doors was stunning and the quiet mornings surrounded by bird song was lovely. We made use of the hot tub on site one evening during our stay, which was a great experience and one we would greatly recommend. Alan explained the process and was very helpful. Would highly recommend for a peaceful rustic getaway, surrounded by beautiful walks and not too far from the nearest town for food and drink.

Fantastic place, would love to come back

A charming and comfortable home in a stunning location. Plenty of walks from the door and less than 10 minutes to the lake shore. The outside seating catches the evening sun if you're lucky enough to have it; we spent many evenings sat outside just watching the beautiful scenery.

Wonderful and peaceful place to stay

Thank you Alan and Cheryl for creating a wonderful and peaceful place to stay right in the heart of the Lakes. Manesty is far enough from the hustle and bustle of the nearby towns but close enough to everything I needed. 20 minutes walk to the lake to pick up the lake boat and visit Keswick, some of the Wainwright's directly from the door and stables and 30 minutes away. Honister Slate Mine was one of the main reasons for my stay and was 20 minutes by car, the pass is truly spectacular and the Mine definitely worth a visit. Thank you again and I will certainly keep you in mind if I return to the Lakes for another holiday.

Couldn't ask for more

Couldn't wish for a more beautiful place to stay, surrounded by walks, temperate rainforest woodlands, lakes, views and with Keswick on your doorstep. We really enjoyed using the wood burning hot tub, left Manesty feeling refreshed and revitalised.

Peace and tranquility

Absolutely beautiful location if you are looking for peace and tranquility, surrounded by nature. Red squirrel seen most days! Caravan is retro compact and quirky, loved it. Everything you need, towels and torch provided too. Borrowdale hotel nearest for food and drink approximately half mile along road but we favoured Mary’s Mount about a mile away by car/walk or a 20minute trail walk across the marshes. Recommend taking larger mugs if you like a bigger brew than 60’s style cups! Nearest supermarket is Booths in Keswick, everything you need in there and an easy to park large car park, 1hr free . Fantastic walks and climbs right from the door and lots of information given about this in the caravan. Enjoy.
