Characterful Cruck Cottage is just the place if you’re looking to stay in the historic town of Pickering on the edge of the North York Moors. This 300-year-old, stone-walled cottage is full of old-world charm just like the town it stands in. Whether you’re enjoying a local ale in a traditional inn or waiting for a steam train at Pickering station, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. At first glance, Cruck Cottage, with its exposed beams and log burner, only adds to that sensation. But in fact, its heritage features are carefully balanced with all the modern comforts and conveniences you want from a holiday home.

Comfy sofas and a Smart TV sit under the beams in the surprisingly spacious open-plan living area downstairs, and the kitchen is thoroughly up-to-date. A coffee machine crowns the list of appliances you’ll find in there. The ground floor also offers a dining room and a conservatory that leads out to a pretty, enclosed patio garden. With outside space in mind, it’s worth mentioning this self-catering cottage is dog-friendly and the location suits four-legged friends very well.

Up the winding wooden stairs, you’ll find one bedroom with a king-size bed, one with a double and a third with a single, all made up with luxury linens. There’s carpet underfoot, but as you’d expect from a building like this, each room is different in shape, size and character features. You’ll find plenty more beams up here, criss-crossing the painted walls. The big surprise is the generously sized bathroom, which offers a free-standing bath as well as a separate shower. There are quirky prints on the walls and good quality toiletries that would suit an upmarket boutique hotel – a perfect place to freshen up before an evening out.

Having that choice is part of the joy of a self-catering stay here in Pickering. Just a short walk from the cottage, the town itself has to be one of the UK's most dog-friendly places to stay, with four-legged friends welcomed in most of the shops, pubs and restaurants. The nearest pub, The Sun, is an award-winning dog-friendly watering hole (famous for its craft beer and real ales) with a log burner and garden – lovely in any weather and less than a minute’s stroll away. Walk just a couple of minutes further and there’s a choice of places serving good Yorkshire fare that’ll set you up for another day’s adventures. And, what's more, your cottage is the perfect base for exploring the wonders of North Yorkshire – after long walks in the National Park, a trip to the coast (Scarborough and Whitby are both a 30-minute drive), family-friendly fun at Flamingo Land (10 minutes away), or a day out on the train, you can kick back in your cottage or head out on foot for dinner and drinks.
