Located in the heart of the National Park, on the edge of the lively town of Brockenhurst, this family-run hotel couldn't be better suited to a short break in the New Forest  – a unique and quirky place to stay that feels almost as if it has been crafted out of the surrounding woodland. Not only is much of the furniture handmade using the nearby trees, the owners make a point of using mainly local suppliers, with the aim of becoming the first fully sustainable New Forest hotel. They won the New Forest's 'Sustainable Business' award in 2022, and Boutique Hotelier's 'Sustainable Achievement; award the year before, and it's a thoroughly eco-friendly property  in almost every way – although the room that was powered by its own exercise bike is sadly no more!

Despite – or perhaps because of – its eco-credentials, the hotel is comfortable and relaxed throughout, something that is most manifest in its 16 rustic-chic, individually designed guest bedrooms, each of which has good fast wifi (quite a boon in an area where phone and broadband signals tend to be erratic), TVs with Freeview and good-sized en-suite bathrooms, mostly with bath-showers combined and eco-friendly refillable toiletries; they also have tea- and coffee-making facilities and there's homemade cake on hand whenever you want it. Around half the rooms are furnished with amazing four-poster beds that look as if they crept in from the forest outside (one is carved from a single, fallen oak tree, another from a single ash, while a third is a grouping of silver birch trunks); there is also a family room with its own garden and three dog-friendly rooms at the rear of the property with their own patios.

There's an honesty bar downstairs and a breakfast room which serves a terrific, locally sourced and diverse breakfast each morning. The same room turns into the separately run 'White Tails' restaurant every evening except Sunday and Monday, serving a good-value menu of mainly crowd-pleasing classics (think soft scotch eggs or salmon cannelloni followed by lamb shank, crispy New Forest pork loin or wild mushroom stroganoff).

That's about it as far as the facilities go, and in any case everyone comes here for the forest, which bristles with expectation a few minutes' away from the hotel – thousands of acres of woods and heathland, accessible by way of multiple footpaths, off-road cycle paths and bridleways which is a joy all year round , with the famous New Forest Ponies, sheep and donkeys wandering freely all year but particularly enchanting during spring and autumn. Meanwhile there are plenty of other facilities close to hand: Brockenhurst itself is a large village with good shops, pubs and places to eat, cycle hire and – perhaps most importantly – a railway station with direct trains to London, making Cottage Lodge a highly feasible car-free possibility. More good news for the eco warriors!
