With wellies lined up in the hall, comfy sofas and roaring fires in the lounge, this Georgian country house, once a royal hunting lodge, is welcoming and informal, but stylish. Refurbished in “shabby chic” style, it has smart, boutique-style rooms in the main house, and a serious of modern, spacious rooms and suites, some with their own terraces, in tastefully converted outbuildings in the gardens. There’s a games room and tennis courts in the gardens as well as miles of delightful New Forest countryside in which to roam. The hotel ethos is smart but casual, the breakfasts are great – made from local ingredients – and there’s a fantastic on-site restaurant, too.

when you pay £500 per night, you expect a good night's sleep

Our room at the Pig was over the restaurant. There was no warning of this when we booked. There appears to be no soundproofing between the downstairs and upstairs. Consequently we were unable to sleep on either night until the restaurant emptied and the music was switched off. We have not had such a noisy room since we used to stay in cheap pubs in the 1980s. Some concession was made when we checked out, but we did not feel that it adequately compensated for our disappointment and disturbed sleep. Our verdict: Over-rated, over-priced and very disappointing.
