It’s four-poster beds and bumps in the night at this self-styled jewel in the crown of Rye. The Inn was built in 1420 and the Norman cellars dating back to 1156. Once a notorious smugglers’ den, this is now one of the oldest buildings in Rye and has all the charm you'd expect. It’s a traditional-looking inn with ivy out front and dark wood within, and is surprisingly like the Tardis: somehow it manages to pack 31 rooms under its seemingly modest roof. One way it does this is with corridors that feel like secret passages leading you to the individual rooms, which vary in style, some boast good views from their tiny windows. Each is named after a person from the history of the Inn and reflects their character. In Dr Syn's Bedchamber you'll find (or not) a secret stairway concealed behind the bookcase, look in at your peril. The Elizabethan Bedchamber has a lovely four-poster bed in which Elizabeth I stayed.   Downstairs the restaurant fuses British and French cuisine, while the lounge has a roaring open fire to keep you warm in winter. It's about as charismatic and cosy a place as you could find – and even has a few resident ghosts just to add to the atmosphere.
