Tickton Grange
UK England North East England East Riding of Yorkshire Beverley
When the Whymant family came to the Georgian country house of Tickton Grange over thirty years ago, it was delapidated and unloved in the extreme. Now it's one of Yorkshire's finest country-house hotels, collecting award after award for its accommodation, food and highly personal service. The family story is writ large across the hotel – successful Northamptonshire shoemakers who moved back to the place they used to come on holiday, and who have subsequently renovated every inch of the building using local craftsmen and artisans. There are 21 guest rooms spread across various buildings – apart from the main house, lodgings are also in the renovated stables and pump room, servants' quarters and workers' cottages. Family members grew up in these rooms, and played in the gardens, so the sense of pride here is palpable. As you might imagine, no two rooms are the same, but expect country-house-chic and plenty of welcoming touches – handmade chocolates, fresh flowers, Bramley toiletries. Nothing's too much trouble, and service comes with a broad smile from staff who have been with the family for years. Dogs are welcome at Tickton Grange and they will provide a dog bed, towel, bowls and treats in the room in readiness for doggy guests and guests will also be welcomed at Reception by Bert, the family field spaniel. You'd be mad not to eat in the restaurant, Hide, which has gathered plenty of its own garlands too, and with Beverley and Bridlington on the doorstep this is the perfect romantic East Yorkshire weekend getaway.
