Restored railway carriages with hot tubs near Beamish in County Durham
The little village of Beamish in County Durham is well-known for its living museum, which preserves the history of life in England’s north-east. Less than a mile down the road is Beamish Glamping – a boutique site on the edge of a woodland where four cabins offer the chance to stay close to this area’s big attraction. In fact, it’s doing its bit for local history as well: two of its cabins are lovingly restored railway carriages, while the other two are new builds with a different style but an equal appeal. Each is a self-contained, cosy and very well-equipped place to stay for a couple, family or small group of friends, with a private deck and a hot tub outside and all the amenities you need inside.
If it’s nostalgia or romance you’re after, choose The Willow or The Sycamore. These are the authentic railway carriage conversions. The Willow is just for couples: outside, she’s painted minty green, inside she offers an open-plan living space with a double bed, kitchenette and log burner. The Sycamore is family-sized with a full kitchen and two bedrooms to prove it; her exterior is dark, unpainted wood. They're both charming places to stay, but with an old school charm that's balanced with modern conveniences, which means a hot tub, Smart TV, WiFi, and a modern bathroom.
If it’s the contemporary touches that make this place appealing, you might be more at home in the purpose-built lodges of Silver Birch or Oak. The Silver Birch, in particular, draws inspiration from the railway carriages. Both are spacious and more modern in style as well as structure. Each sleeps up to four adults plus one or two kids, and The Oak is pet-friendly, too.
These carriages and lodges share a grassy idyll that’s surrounded by trees, and the place is full of birdsong. It’s just 10 miles south of Newcastle and eight miles north of Durham, making it a great escape from the city as well as a rural base for anyone who wants to explore it. But of course, the closest attraction, and the one that most people want to visit, is Beamish Museum itself, the living museum that’s usurped the name of the village. It’s less than a mile away, and between here and there are two good options for food: an Italian and Indian restaurant. Handily, both also offer takeaways, so you don’t have to miss an evening away from the charm of Beamish Glamping.
