Jimmy Allen's

19–21 Elvet Bridge Durham DH1 3AA

Housed in vaulted cellars beneath Elvet Bridge, this lively, split-level bar is very local-heavy, particularly at the weekend. Music is on the ear-splitting side but – given that's it's free – Jimmy’s is a good place to warm up before heading on to a club. There's a ghoulish history here that's lost on most punters – the vaults were once dank dungeons where the ghost of an aged piper, Jimmy Allen, can still be heard on quiet nights. He's not heard that often, if you get our drift.
