Britain's Best Christmas Markets

Nothing gets you more in the festive mood than a stroll around a magical Christmas market – and these days we're spoilt for choice in the UK, with everything from traditional Victorian affairs to feasts of Bavarian and German stalls, and even a few Russian influences too.  The best ones tend to start around the end of November and continue into at least mid-December up to Christmas and occasionally even into the New Year, so whether you're there to nail some last-minute Christmas presents or to just sip mulled wine and marvel at the twinkling lights, there should be something to suit everyone.

Bath Christmas Market

It's always nice to have an excuse to go to Bath and it's hard to think of a better one right now than its fabulous Christmas Market. It has around 200 chalets packed with high quality Christmas gifts, homewares, tasty food and drink, jewellery and much more. Nov 23–Dec 10

Birmingham Christmas Market

This is one of the largest German markets held outside Germany and Austria. It has great food, warming drinks, traditional gifts and live music, and attracts visitors from across the city and the UK. Nov 16–Dec 24

Canterbury Christmas Market

Situated on Whitefriars Square in the centre of the city, this is one of the smaller Christmas markets, but it's grown hugely this year and for the first time the market will extend into St George’s Street. There's plenty of German mulled wine, sausages, magical twinkling lights and stunning Christmas decorations. Nov 25–Dec 24

Cardiff Christmas Market

Spreading across the heart of the pedestrianised part of Cardiff's city centre, from St John St to Hills St, this is now larger than ever, with close on 200 stalls. Most of the exhibitors are small Welsh businesses, whose products cannot be found in any high street shops. Nov 9–Dec 23

Deepdale Christmas Market

North Norfolk's best Christmas Market takes place in the lovely coastal village of Burnham Deepdale and is a great weekend of live music and entertainment – well worth basing a weekend around. There are over 120 stalls across the site, all selling products that you won't find in the usual high street stores. 1-3 Dec

Edinburgh European Christmas Market  

Edinburgh's European Christmas Market once again returns to East Princes St Gardens with a whole host of bespoke and traditional Christmas items, as well as a fabulous great selection of festive food & drink, from German sausage to fresh Scottish seafood. Nov 18–Jan 6

Exeter Christmas Market

Situated right in the heart of the city on Cathedral Green, Exeter's market has an exciting mix of local and continental traders, showcasing the best of festive food, crafts and gifts. Nov 16–Dec 17

Glasgow Christmas Market

Held in beautiful St Enoch Square – within the grounds of a festive village of rustic cabins – Glasgow's Christmas Market has over 50 colourful stalls, selling everything from artisan gifts to scarves, chutneys, cheeses, and jewellery. Nov 9–Dec 29

Leeds Christkindelmarkt

One of the longest-running German markets in the UK, Leeds goes all out for an authentic German Christmas flavour, with over 40 traditional wooden stalls and chalets, festive greenery, carousels and food & drink outlets all set in the award winning Millennium Square. Lots of kids' activities on Sunday mornings. Nov 10–Dec 24

London Christmas Markets

Based in Hyde Park from mid-November till New Year's day, Winter Wonderland is one of the biggest Christmas markets in London,with more than 200 wooden cabins, ice-skating and more. The Southbank Centre is a good place to shop for Christmas gifts and quirky crafts at their twinkling wooden cabins, or you can head to Leicester Square to browse more than 25 stalls selling lots of Christmas goodies. Nov 17- Jan 1

Manchester Christmas Market

Spead across the city centre, Manchester's Christmas Markets are free and accessible to all, with a total of 300 beautiful stalls and chalets and both European and local producers offering handmade goodies, gifts, food that caters to all tastes and jewellery stalls. Nov 10- Dec 20

Salisbury Christmas Market

Located at Guildhall Square, Salisbury is perhaps one of the most romantic markets in Britain. Now in its sixth year, it has a Father Christmas Grotto, choir singing and music from local schools. The usual festive culinary treats are also on offer. Nov 23–Dec 22

Winchester Christmas Market

Winchester's Christmas Market occupies a magical location right by the cathedral and around its own ice rink. It has pretty wooden chalets that have been hand-picked for their interesting, high quality and unique products, many of which can’t be bought on the high street. Nov 20–Dec 22
