You're in charge of organising a family holiday for just under 30 people on the North Devon Coast, but feel a bit daunted. We're not surprised. Large yet stylish and comfortable properties aren't 10 a penny, which is why Westwell Hall is such a gem of a find. Just a few minutes' drive (or a 15-minute stroll) from Ilfracombe Beach, this grand sea-view house stands proudly over four floors and sleeps 29 across 14 bedrooms (most are en-suite). But this isn't just a place for families: stag and hen parties and bunches of friends are also welcome, as are two dogs – basically, big groups looking for a luxurious coastal escape.

The ground floor of the striking Victorian holiday cottage is home to a fully equipped kitchen with sleek black units and seating for a handful of people, a lounge complete with an original fireplace, and a dining room with space for 30. There's a bar (including a fridge, dishwasher and glassware) and a snug on this level too – the latter isn't as small as the name implies. Wherever you are in Westwell Hall, there's tons of natural light thanks to large windows. In fact, the dining area is housed in a conservatory-like structure. The remaining storeys – lower, first and second – are connected by staircases and where the bedrooms reside, plus a few extras like a second kitchen and a games room. Each guest suite is stylish and colourful – think patterned wallpaper, brightly painted walls and vibrant headboards – and they come in several configurations, including doubles, twins, family and singles. We recommend bagging a spot on the first or second floor to make the most of those glorious sea outlooks.

In the back garden, enjoy the decking area with a BBQ and seating – perfect for warm evenings and al fresco meals – and out the front, you'll find a hot tub. Parking-wise, you can fit eight cars. Once you've arrived, there's a good chance you won't need your vehicle again until you leave: the centre of Ilfracombe with its harbour, pubs, cafés and restaurants is within walking distance. But if you do want to venture slightly further afield, popular beaches like Croyde and Woolacombe are reachable within half an hour.
