Imagine lazing on a lounger on a spacious south-facing balcony with a glass of something cold in hand. If that sounds appealing, a stay at Sunnycliffe House on the North Devon Coast will hit the spot nicely. Overlooking Combesgate Beach (the smaller sister of three-mile Woolacombe) and Baggy Point beyond, the holiday home has lots to offer, including an open-plan living/dining space – French doors lead from there to the balcony – and a second terrace (this one's west-facing) with seating and more of those uninterrupted scenic views. On the first level, check out the family bathroom and trio of sea-facing bedrooms sleeping six in total: a king-size master with an en-suite, a twin with a small balcony, and a double.

If you like to cook, the ground floor kitchen is small but perfectly formed, complete with all the appliances you need – electric oven and hob, dishwasher and microwave – plus a small table. But you're so close to Woolacombe that you may prefer to eat out in one of the town's many pubs and restaurants. The dinky café at Barricane Beach is also worth a visit, serving tasty homemade Sri Lankan curries every evening between 5 and 7pm from Easter onwards. Pull up a pew outside or bring a picnic blanket, and get ready for a feast. Fancy a beer to go alongside? It's BYO, so don't forget to pick up a few cans en route.

Summer is a fab time to visit this lovely part of North Devon and enjoy the likes of rock pooling, surfing and sunning yourself on one of the many beaches –Combesgate is on your doorstep, but only accessible between low and mid tide, Woolacombe is a short stroll away, and you can get to Croyde and Saunton Sands by car within 25 minutes. If charming cliff-top villages are more your vibe, Mortehoe is just around the headland (be sure to factor in a pitstop at Morte Point for seal-spotting). Meanwhile, Big Sheep Farm & Theme Park and Exmoor Zoo are reachable in less than three-quarters of an hour. But really, you can holiday here at any time of the year – hike the South West Coast Path, cycle to nearby Ilfracombe, or simply cosy up back at Sunnycliffe House.
