36 Blue Boar Row Salisbury Wiltshire SP1 1DA

This Salisbury branch of the rapidly growing Bill's chain was recently transformed from a pub, and makes the most of the original pubby ambience while instilling all the funky brand values that these restaurants are known for, with its shelves of groceries relaxed vibe and and all-day menus mixing well with the beams, clubby chairs and sofas and chandeliers. Bill's thing is (we think) to sort of be everyone's fave neighbourhood place to eat – dead relaxed and serving good, reliable, affordable food.  It's pretty spacious inside, but also has lots of outside seating across two courtyards, and is bang in the centre of Salisbury, a couple of minutes' walk from the cathedral. The atmosphere is noisy, slightly chaotic even (if it's a quiet tete-a-tete you're after, this is not the place), but service is prompt and friendly and atmosphere always buzzy and fun. The menus is, as they say, "Breakfast to Bedtime', starting with fab Full English breakfast (as well as healthier early morning fare); lunch and dinner menus take in a bit of everything really. deliberately focusing on crowd-pleasing comfort food that everyone likes – you could have a burger or fish finger sandwich, a pot of mussels or fish pie, half a chicken or a Thai curry, or just a steak –  and the results are honestly pretty good, served with speed and style and at good prices too. They also serve afternoon tea, and have a decent kids' menu, though for some reason this isn't available in the evening. Overall we like Bill's. Trying to live up to everyone's fave restaurant fantasy ain't easy, but they come pretty close to pulling it off.
