Tate Britain
Millbank London SW1P 4RG United Kingdom
Part of the Tate family to include Tate Modern and Tate Liverpool, Tate Britain is in our opinion one of the best of the free museums in London. Located on the north bank of the Thames, 200 yards from Vauxhall Bridge, this elegant building used to display the modern and contemporat works of the Tate but now focuses solely on British art, combining the old and the new, with everything from Hockney and Moore to Gainsborough and Turner. The museum creators are bold enough to put on eclectic shows of what your grandparents might describe as 'absolute rubbish'.But that is the beauty of Tate Britain – appealing to those with hankering for modern styles while visitors with with more traditional tastes can appreciate the classic portraits and the huge religious canvasses that also hang here. The space and the light of the rooms is magnificent, and you will certainly not want to miss the Clore Gallery extension, which houses the country's largest collection of Turner paintings in a revolving exhibition. There are also neat touches like photographs by Don McCullin. An absolute treat. And of course it is absolutely free. Book yourself in for a day – you can always lunch in their elegant restaurant.
