This 4-star abode is every bit as grand as the famously imposing station that both lends it its name and shares its location. One of Britain's great railway termini, Glasgow Central oozes romance, and the hotel, opened late in 2010 after a £20-million rejuvenation, conjures up the days of grand Victorian travellers on their way to the islands.

The grand entrance and lobby set the tone for a hotel that updates this old dame of a building without ruining her character. A flurry of impressive business and meetings facilities pull in the suited-and-booted brigade, but really the hotel's effortless cool would suit anybody, and is ideal for anyone catching the London sleeper train next door.
