YHA has bagged a real beauty with this brand-new hostel, located at Northumberland National Park's stunning landscape discovery centre, known as The Sill. Inspired by the Great Whin Sill, a nearby geographical feature, the
building reflects the landscape with its dry stone walls,
glass and timber – renewable energy is used throughout and you can even walk on the green roof!
There are 86 beds across 26 rooms, 18 of those en-suite, including 8 private twin rooms and 2 rooms that are fully disabled-access compliant. This makes it pretty adaptable all round, great for couples, families or Hadrian's Wall walkers alike. There's a cafe and panoramic terrace at the centre available during the day, and a bar, meals service and self-catering kitchen at the hostel, plus all the other usual hostel facilities – wifi throughout too, even out here in the sticks. If you've walked here along the Wall, it's a real boon to be able to rest up, get a bite to eat and chill out in the communal spaces and outdoor corners.
Some of the finest Roman sites are just a short walk away, while the Hadrian's Wall bus zips past, connecting you with Hexham, the railway and all the other sights along the Wall. At night, chill out in one of the most spectacular parts of Northumberland National Park – it's real Dark Sky country out here, with zillions of stars visible to the naked eye.
