The Twice Brewed Inn
Less than a mile west of Vindolanda fortress, the site of a Roman Army Museum, The Twice Brewed Inn features a cosy, tartan-carpeted pub and is just south of Hadrian’s Wall. Sycamore Gap, a much-photographed dip in what was long ago the Roman Empire’s most northerly frontier, lies within easy walking distance of this country pub.Ideally placed for an overnight stay on the southern fringe of Northumberland National Park and exploring Hadrian’s Wall, the inn has a sizable car park just off the B3618 – which locals often call ‘the military road’. Low light pollution levels make the region’s dark skies an additional reason to overnight here. The inn has an observatory with telescopes with which you can view details of the Milky Way. Astrophotography workshops feature among a range of stargazing events. The 19 bedrooms are comfortable and modern. They’re equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, televisions and en suite showers. Superiors give you views of the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dogs are welcome and there’s a pet-friendly double room on the first floor. Staying brings opportunities to sample Twice Brewed Brew House beers in its taproom. Booking a tour is an option should you wish to hear details of the beermaking process, which uses water drawn from an onsite well. There’s a terraced beer garden at the back of the inn and in the. Puff pastry topped steak pie and pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven feature among the comfort food on the inn’s dinner menu.
