Park Farm House
Looking for somewhere intimate with great facilities deep in the English countryside? This pint-sized boutique B&B ticks just about every box going. Situated just outside the pretty Somerset village of Lullington, Park Farm House is the sort of place that's easy to settle into but hard to leave. With just two en-suite bedrooms, it punches far above its weight in terms of facilities, with a large open-air swimming pool, its own tennis court and croquet on the lawns of beautifully-tended gardens – and, of course, a million-and-one walks in the bucolic countryside around.
A late 19th-century Arts-and-Crafts house, set in its own extensive grounds with far-reaching views, Park Farm House is a historic property in many ways, but one where the emphasis on comfort and pleasure is very much of the 21st century. Bedroom 1 is a large double with views over the garden, a kingsized bed and a large en-suite bathroom with a double-ended bath and large walk-in power shower. Bedroom 2 is slightly smaller but still a decent size, and has the advantage of west-facing sunset views and a bathroom with bath and power shower. Both bathrooms have underfloor heating and are equipped with large fluffy towels and high-end toiletries; the beds have Eygptian cotton sheets and soft feather duvets, along with Smart TVs, tea- and coffee- making facilities, DAB radios and wifi.
The owner Katherine makes you feel very welcome, and it's hard not to relax in what is an undeniably beautiful location: she serves afternoon tea every day and breakfasts are hearty affairs that set you up for the day – exploring the surrounding countryside, visiting nearby historic attractions or just lazing by the pool and dozing between croquet shots. It's a romantic retreat for couples in many ways, with a shot of country-chic and highly personal service – children are welcomed, but only if they are over 12.
Frome is a short bike ride away (there are bikes for hire on-site) and has lots to recommend it – a good monthly market, great indie shops, pubs and restaurants, and the sort of positive vibe you would expect in a town that is regularly voted the most attractive place to live in Britain. Plus there are any number of equally enticing places to visit less than half an hour away by car – Bradford-on-Avon and Bath being just the closest. Like we said, there aren't that many boxes that remain un-ticked at what is a superlative and enticing B&B.

Depending on season, Bedroom 1 costs £110–£115 a night, Bedroom 2 £95–£100 – both including breakfast. During busy periods they sometimes ask for a minimum 2-night stay.

Park Farm House is easy to find, off the A36 and around 3 miles outside Frome. At the main Beckington roundabout on the A36, take the exit towards Bath; after less than a mile you cross a small bridge over the River Frome and almost immediately after take a left turn towards Laverton. Turn left at the first crossroads towards Lullington and carry on for a mile; Park Farm is on the left – the main house at the top of the drive.
