A contemporary Welsh hotel par excellence, a brief stroll from St Davids

Just a short walk from the centre of the little city of St Davids, Twr y Felin is ideally situated for exploring one of the loveliest counties in Wales. The scenery in this part of the world can be breathtaking, and the hotel is only ten minutes away from the 186-mile long-Coast Path, so is ideally placed for all kinds of hiking trips. The Oriel y Parc Visitor Centre and Gallery is actually opposite the hotel and hosts the changing exhibitions of the National Museum Wales collections.

A former windmill set in its own grounds, and dating back to 1806, it's anything but rustic, with public spaces that are seriously – and very deliberately – chic, with minimalist grey and black furnishings, subdued lighting and a wealth of contemporary art, most of it commissioned specially for the hotel and inspired by the St Davids Peninsula. The 39 guest rooms are similarly contemporary, and have robes, slippers, aromatherapy toiletries and Nespresso coffee makers, as well as a mini fridge. The best room in the house is the Windmill Tower suite – spread over three stories, it has a spacious bedroom and lounge and a spiral staircase that takes you to the original observatory located on the highest floor of the hotel, giving you spectacular 360-degree views of the whole peninsula, including the nearby coastline at Caerfai Bay. You couldn’t be anywhere else in the world, and indeed Twr y Felin revels in its 'Welshness': the menu of its three Rosette restaurant – ‘Blas’ (literally, ‘Taste’ in Welsh) – features local specialities such as local lamb, crab and delicious Welsh cheeses.

All in all, Twr y Felin is a quite rare thing – a place where you can immerse yourself in Wales, in the most contemporary of surroundings. There's also a unique sister hotel nearby called Roch Castle, and a boutique hotel (also close by) by the name of Penrhiw Priory.

St Davids, Britain's smallest city is steeped in history and is the gateway to numerous cultural experiences. Surrounded by art galleries and the natural environment, it's the perfect place to settle for a few days.

The Blue Lagoon is also easily reachable, a former slate quarry flooded by the sea, with improbably turquoise blue waters into which thrill-seekers regularly fling themselves.

And nearby Caerfai Bay, voted among the world’s 100 best beaches, is a beauty: clear jade-green water laps golden sands, while steep cliffs make it a real suntrap.

But for another top option, check out The Shed, an informal fish-and-chip restaurant in the renowned village of Porthgain, with great local seafood and shellfish, landed daily and served within hours.
