Frankly, there are few places to stay in Britain as gobsmackingly awesome as Roch Castle. It’s a 12th-century Welsh castle – and looks like one, perched high above the Pembrokeshire landscape with panoramic views over St Brides Bay and the Preseli Hills. Step inside to find the historical footprint intact, with the feel of a real castle but luxurious contemporary interiors – so much so that the hotel was named Wales' Best Bed and Breakfast in 2018’s National Tourism Awards. There are six ensuite bedrooms within its massive walls, each making the most of the building’s curves and unusually-shaped windows. Pared back and ultra-contemporary, they feature wooden floors, stark modern bathrooms, plus robes and slippers. The jewel of the castle, the Sun Room, is located on the fourth floor and has floor-to-ceiling glass walls, an al fresco viewing platform and a well-stocked honesty bar you can help yourself to.

Breakfast is made to order and served in the dining room, using local ingredients and produce. And for dinner, head to Blas restaurant at sister hotel Twr y Felin, located in St Davids, just a 20-minute drive away.

Overall, the atmosphere is intimate and secluded, and with so few rooms, you really feel like the castle is yours for the duration of your stay – and no request is too much trouble. The castle is surrounded by acres of private grounds, but if you can bring yourself to leave, there are 186 miles of coastal path to explore, not to mention the wildlife-rich islands of Ramsey, Skomer and Skokholm which lie just off the coast. All in all, it's the ideal place for a fantasy break.

If you've ever wondered what it felt like to be king/queen of the castle, then this is the breathtaking-in-every-sense-of-the-word venue is just the place. It offers intimacy and pure sensual opulence in droves. The ultimate decadent and romantic getaway.

Suitable For

The Sun Room, with alfresco viewing platform which offers endless views of St Brides Bay and the Preseli Hills. Whatever the weather, it's easy to lose hours staring at the landscape. Head up here at sunset.

We love how we are central to the north and south of the county. It's the perfect place to start exploring Pembrokeshire. There's nearby St Davids: named after the patron saint of Wales, this is officially the UK’s smallest city – and worth a visit for just that, plus its magnificent cathedral.

Skomer Island makes for a top day trip – a wildlife reserve with huge numbers of seabirds, plus seals and the occasional dolphin, but it’s the puffins for which it's best known. And Newgale Beach is one of the longest in Wales – a two-mile sweep that's popular with dogs, surfers and just about anyone who knows a top beach when they see one.

Blas Restaurant at your sister hotel, Twr y Felin in St Davids, offers three Rosette fine dining.
