Elegant Elizabethan manor house Ockenden Manor ticks all the boxes for a sybaritic night away. Spa? A spectacularly nice one, newly opened and housed in a sleek, purpose-built cube, with a spring-fed indoor-outdoor pool and views over the Sussex countryside. Good food? Yup – in fact its restaurant has a Michelin star. And luxurious rooms? Well, it depends on your budget: the cheapest rooms are a bit on the poky side, and slightly frumpy too, but if your budget stretches to one of the new spa rooms you’re on to a winner: these are altogether more glamorous, and come with rolltop baths, Nespresso machines and views out over the rooftop garden. Ockenden Manor is in a great spot too, not more than twenty minutes’ drive from a clutch of gorgeous Sussex gardens – Wakehurst Place and Sheffield Park amongst them – or, to the south, the pretty village of Ditchling and the South Downs. Whether you’ll actually want to leave the hotel grounds though, is an altogether different matter.

Rooms start at £190. Look out for dinner-bed-and-spa special offers, which can be very good-value.
