A characterful 14th-century pub with boutique rooms in Frome

Frome is the sort of place that's always getting written up in the colour supplements as one of Britain's favourite places to live. And no wonder: it has an atmospheric old centre full of independent shops, cafes and eateries and is just a few miles from Bath, so very much on the cultural map. The town is also surrounded by beautiful Somerset countryside, so it pretty much ticks all the boxes. It would be hard to find a better base than The Archangel, a long-standing hostelry that pre-dates most of Frome's ancient buildings.

First of all, it’s a delightful pub, which dates back as far as 1311 and boasts bare walls and cosy fireplaces, although it's been careful to move with the times. Part of the local Butcombe group, you'd expect a decent range of ales. What you might be surprised by is the quality of food they serve, in what is by any standards a delightful place to eat (especially in summer, when glass doors open onto a secluded courtyard). Also, the guest rooms are comfortable, contemporary and a little bit quirky.

There 10 in all, ranging from 'Classic' doubles that face onto the courtyard to 'Signature' bedrooms that face King Street (and are therefore a little quieter at night). There's bags of character – several have beamed and vaulted ceilings and they all come with big and bold feature walls. The Signature category is the best, complete with rolltop baths and king-size beds, while other options have showers and sometimes smaller beds. They all come with tea- and coffee-making facilities, good WiFi, Freeview TVs, and some are dog-friendly.
