Contender for one of Somerset’s prettiest villages, Hinton St George is also home to one of the county’s most enduring hostelries. Overseen by Charlie Luxton, the enterprising owner of The Talbot in Mells, the seventeenth century Lord Poulett Arms is a beautifully proportioned hamstone building concealing six bedrooms of contrasting styles and sizes. The five doubles aside – two of which have private bathrooms outside the room – there’s a larger room catering to families, hence the bunk bed. Throughout, creamy-white and partially bare brick walls are offset with subtle splashes of colour, such as in the throws, patterned rugs and bedside lamps, while Siberian goose-down bedding offers the promise of a marvellous night’s sleep. The Luxton hand is, quite literally, all over this place, from Charlie’s black and white sketches to the selection of organic Bramley toiletries created by his wife Chloe. Otherwise, the bathrooms are furnished with elegant slipper or roll top baths and walk-in showers.

The wonderful timeworn bar brims with villagey atmosphere thanks to a merry band of loyal locals, while the restaurant menu features a choice of innovative plant-based dishes with ingredients harvested in the kitchen garden. The real revelation however is the outdoor space, comprising a French parterre with pétanque piste and one of the few extant pelota walls in the area, and beyond here a heavily scented orchard. Plenty to stick around for then, but remember, this is hardcore cider territory, so you may well be tempted to venture to one of the many local cidermakers, and that would be no bad thing.
