Set within a lovely country house hotel, Summer Lodge is one of Dorset’s top restaurants. It uses largely local, seasonal ingredients, many grown in the hotel’s own kitchen garden, to create outstanding dishes, such as the chef’s signature Lyme Bay scallops with Butternut Squash Puree and Truffle Fritters. Main courses might include Exmoor venison or local line-caught seabass and there’s a cheese board to die for with a choice of 27 artisan cheeses, all from the West Country. It won’t be cheap if you go a la carte, but the three-course set menu is a good value way to sample cooking of such a high standard, accompanied by something from the award-winning wine list chosen by one of Britain’s top sommeliers.
